I really didn’t like Covenant, killing off Prometheus heroine before proceedings started with the most poorly written of reasons/excuses and Michael Fassbender just needed a moustache to twirl and he could done a Dick Dastardly at the end to putthe icing on a particularly sh*tty cake, I thought the whole point of that and Prometheus were to build another series of films that would tie in with what happens in Alien but I’m guessing the meagre response to Covenant put a stop on that and someone decided to greenlight this.
I thought I heard there’s an Alien tv series on the way too but I really didn’t like Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead reboot so I’ll give this a miss.

As long as the Xenomorphs burst out of chests, I'm happy Don't Breathe is an excellent film by Fede Alvarez, I think a back to basics approach for Alien is what was needed. Critics may have liked Covenant but audiences clearly didn't.

Okay, if Aliens (Cameron) is a high watermark of the series for you, you’re going to love this. Even though it uses similar plot points, it’s able to continuously ratchet the peril and tension with some new twists and old foes.

I know covenant has its fans but I’m not one. The film’s ignoring that and going old school. It’s a slightly slow start, and things are very familiar to Aliens but with some really well thought out twists.

Nah, don’t think this was for me. Tacky fan service moments cheapened lots of the drama (of which it promised plenty at first) but the cast was too small, the wrong ‘old’ ideas were repeated and the supposed twist ending was just a rip off of ‘Resurrection’. Didn’t hate it, didn’t love it. Appreciated the lead being basically a female teenager rather than a ‘Ripley’ type. Interesting android character too. I think it needs seeing, but not with the pressure of being called ‘the third best Alien film’.

Oh I’m sorry I got your hopes up. Glad you saw it though, as you said. If you’re a fan, it’s worth watching. I thought some of the ideas were exciting and really entertaining, but it Aliens is a high benchmark.

Mostly good stuff, face huggers more skittish and spidery than ever before.
In terms of the fan service, let's just say it would have been so much better if he had left it at the first half of the line...
There's been lots of articles doing the rounds about how 'disgusting', 'groundbreaking' and 'graphic' particular sequences are in this, but I must admit I didn't find anything to be out of the ordinary for sci-fi/horror. Or maybe I just watch too much gruesome stuff in general?

Highly disappointing.
Lots of relatively inexperienced actors, many of whom were doing "mumbling" acting which seems to be preferred by younger actors.
Nonsensical plot, many points of which I missed due to the aforementioned mumbling.
It seemed to be all about "scares", which, if you've seen all the other films, you've seen it all before.
I preferred all the other films compared to this one.
Maybe a good film for the Gen Zeds who aren't familiar with this originals. But this is a poor facsimile, and for me must be the only reason when it is getting good write ups online.
I just found it "meh", and ended up rewatching my blu ray of Covenant this week - finding it far more engaging.

Or maybe I just watch too much gruesome stuff in general? Yeah, no idea what they’re talking about. I don’t recall anything as messed up as ‘Covenants’ back burster. Reading between the lines of the articles I've seen... {Spoiler - click to view} It seems to be the birthing scene towards the end, coupled with the notion of the human-alien hybrid coming to breast feed after it has grown. Given you barely see anything of real gore, just feels like a classic reaction (by male critics in particular) of being horrified by anything on screen relating to female anatomy that isn't a sex scene. A super odd reaction given I think the self C-section to remove squid baby in Prometheus was worse!
This is something I've noticed changing over the Alien series. Some of the uneasiness of the original narratives was the Freudian violence of men getting 'impregnated' by these horrible, forceful phallic egg layers, but in recent additions they seem to have reverted to women spawning abominations, and that is hardly an innovative trope.

I don’t get the Covenant hate. I find it really inventive and exciting, especially that it rarely gets stuck in the same stalk, scare & kill tropes of the other films. It is much more up front with its monsters.

Started well, but then felt like a "Greatest Hits of the Franchise" movie. I've got the box set of blurays of the previous six but won't be buying this.
