If you have booked for the front row for RED SPEEDOS at the Orange Tree it might be best to wear shorts as there is considerable splash from the frenetic activity in the swimming pool! But worth every drop as the play ~ and the actors are in fine form....

This is very close to saying "I've paid for my tickets, I'll behave how I like" and we all know how that ends up... You pay for the tickets, you wear what you like, I've never got this obsession with dressing up for the theatre, tracksuit bottoms and t-shirt every time for me, rather be comfortable if I'm sitting for three hours. It really isn't. I'm going to be sitting for three hours in the dark in silence, I don't see how it makes a difference if I'm wearing shorts, tracksuit bottoms or a three piece suit while I'm there, what on Earth does that have to do with behaviour? It's exactly this kind of elitist attitude that puts people off the theatre. |

It's comfort all the way for me sat in the theatre so wearing shorts is fine by me. Though despite the warm weather and wearing shorts to a show at the Liverpool Empire this afternoon, someone turned the AC to chill mode and I'm sat in my seat wishing i had worn jeans instead!

Well, y’all seem to think shorts ok. I’m on my own here… Maybe its a generational thing but I'm on the barricade outside the Theatre alongside you! As a gentle(sic)man of indeterminate and considerable age I too detest manspreading. The thought of someone who's already annoyed me repeatedly slapping his calf against mine!!!! I have complained and they always say "Sorry I had no idea - no ones ever mentioned it before" (often that's hard to believe.) The other day I was at Westfield where apparently you are now allowed to bring your family dog(pet?). To see people dragging a reluctant pooch around whilst (some) kids cower and even shriek. The owners are of course mainly unaware of the reactions and when they do notice sometimes offer "Don't worry he won't hurt you." (Which of course, as any psychologist will tell you, completely sets kids at ease with animals.) My point being is that just because you can do something, you really don't have to. The theatre critic being allowed to take up a free seat wearing nothing to absorb his sweat, just shows the lack of curtesy that entitled people frequently display. Part of the job of the audience is to make the performers feel special. Its a win, win. Dress up like you're going somewhere special and its more likely you'll get somewhere special. Dress like you do everyday and it's likely you'll just have another day... "Put on your Sunday clothes and....." PS I had no idea that arguing for this leads to ..... |

Is 'wildlife' not an issue? I used to live in South London and on some bus routes you could actually see the fleas pinging around - my brother had to have his North London houseshare flea fumigated twice this spring (not bedbugs, but he's had that to deal with in the past too). When I go to the cinema / theatre I still tuck my trousers into my socks, and came back from a local cinema trip via bus and train two weeks back with a couple of small red ankle bites.

I don't exactly care if someone is wearing shorts - as in, I don't mind them wandering about in them. But if they're sitting next to me in them, their bare leg had better not touch me. Ew.
(I assume by 'shorts' we're talking knee length or longer, bare legs directly on the seat is a bit gross for both the shorts-wearer and the next person)

At theatres with close-together seating -- the benches at the Menier spring to mind -- I am less concerned about contact with knees, bare or covered, than I am with the actual width of my neighbours.
At The Baker's Wife last week, our row was already occupied when we arrived apart from our "two" seats on the centre aisle. Trying to squeeze into the one-and-a-half spaces remaining was a challenge.

I wore shorts 3 times this week to the theatre, shock horror! Moulin Rouge, Hello Dolly and Pet Shop Boys at ROH. Luckily the weather meant I didn't wear them for Starlight Express last night as it certainly isn't a warm venue.
