I loathed this at Drury Lane, so when you ask "what could they cut", I would reply where do you start! The ONLY time it sprang to life for me was the number in the Inn at Bree. I saw a matinée and went to leave at the interval - but it was absolutely throwing it down outside, so unwisely relented and stayed. Maybe it was improved for the Watermill. At DL it was very much style over substance.

Wish I couldve experienced it myself to get a clearer picture of the hate for this show (not directed at you personally!). To me it all looks and sounds absolutely fabulous. If I could bring back a production in time it’d be this or Der Glockner. |

Well, this hasn't had great reviews - looks like the scaling up of the show for a larger theatre hasn't quite worked and that it misses the intimacy of the Watermill space. Shame.

Well, this hasn't had great reviews - looks like the scaling up of the show for a larger theatre hasn't quite worked and that it misses the intimacy of the Watermill space. Shame. I was kind of expecting US critics to be less warm to this, but from what I've read from the reviews, it's been less about it being at a larger theatre and lack of intimacy, and the main criticisms being more so about it being too long and squishing too much material into a 3 hour show. I'm assuming most of, if not all, the Chicago critcs haven't seen the Watermill producition, so this is their first experience. I don't think this will affect the show in the longrun, as it's still slated for Auckland and it seems to be selling well. Audience reactions have seemed rather positive as well, so if they're flocking to see this, that should be good enough. |

Sydney production confirmed! www.lotronstage.com/Will be running at the State Theatre, so it seems like they're keeping with the trend of choosing fairly big venues for the tour. |

I'm not familiar with the version thats coming down under. Does this version have the outside bit? I'm not familiar with Sydney's state theatre either, so I Wonder if the venue has the capacity to do so.
Excited that its comign down under (and it may be the impetus I need to actually watch the films)

From what I've researched, the State has a seat capacity just over 2,000! |

It seems bigger than the stated capacity, but that could just be the effect of the photos. From the rear, the hobbits will be miniscule!

I imagine that probably is the case, I've been to a number of theatres where the photos make the auditoriums look bigger then they actually are. Even so, it's still a large number of seats, only a few hundred less than the Civic! Not sure why they're aiming for such large venues, when it's a reletively small-scale production! |

I saw this a couple weeks ago and it was largely a big miss for me. I knew it would obviously be a truncated version of the story but it was so oddly split up. Act one was about an hour and forty minutes and was just the first book. Then act two was an hour long and squeezed the other two books in and it just didn’t really come together for me. Some interesting staging but some (sorry but it’s true) truly bad acting made it drag in quite a few places and even though the music was pleasant in a few parts, I just felt like it was an afterthought to the entire production.
