Interesting that this is a brand new musical as there was one Off-Broadway in 2009 just after the film was released. Also there was an opera at the Barbican in 2018.

I remember hearing that they'd workshopped this with Mei Mac (her agency's website confirms this). Would be interested to see if she's still attached.
Fingers crossed this is good. I can imagine the story working well on a small scale.

I found the Mark-Anthony Turnage opera a disappointment - although it got some very good reviews. The book is crying out for a good stage adaptation. Hopefully this will be it.

As an avid fan of both the film and the book, I really hope this is done well and successfully. The film is either nostalgic for some, or terrifying for others - but it still draws in a crowd! They’ll be showing it again in cinemas for the anniversary which will hopefully bring some attention back round to this new musical too. I’m not sure how close they’ll keep to the film’s aesthetic, but I would absolutely love to see an expressionistic and eerie adaptation that brings the stop-motion set to life. I also presume that entirely new music is being written for this as well? Although the original soundtrack is just incredible…

He has a fantastic gothic fantasy style which was used really well for The Magician's Elephant and Wendy & Peter Pan at the RSC, as well as the 2009 A Christmas Carol at Birmingham Rep which almost looked like a Tim Burton film bought to life (not a typical Victorian Christmas setting at all).

Colin Richmond is a superb designer, and has no need to be inspired by Burton. He'll be perfect and innovative. Incidentally, the BFI are having a six week stop motion animation season and exhibition in partnership with Laika - september and october.
