I’ve just been browsing the National Theatre website and on the page for a play called ‘Mnemonic’ playing this summer it says the following… Please note that using mobile phones in the auditorium is not allowed as a requirement for admission.
Im not sure what that means. I’m guessing it means ‘you can’t get in by having your ticket on your phone’ but that’s a very common way to have tickets these days. The website doesn’t elaborate why, and I’m guessing there’s a major part of the show that interferes with phones. Anyone have any idea about this? And the no phones thing I suspect is to do with this part of the "Suitability" guidelines: "prolonged periods of nudity/nakedness". |

That should be a requirement of every production in every theatre. |

Remembering back to the original production, there was a substantial amount of nudity. While mobile phones did exist then, smart phones did not, so this is probably to protect the actors on stage without making everyone in the audience use a Yondr pouch.
Front of house has basically given up on trying to keep people from taking photos before the show starts so now it's quite a regular occurrence to snap photos before and at the interval so I'm guessing this also means that people won't be allowed to do that.
On a side note: When I went to see London Tide I had a mobile ticket on my phone and no one ever actually scanned it, I just showed it to the usher as I entered the theatre and they pointed me in the right direction.

Do the NT ushers have ticket scanners? They are usually happy with anything that shows seat numbers, like the 'Are you ready?' email they send out ahead of the performance. I don't think they scan barcodes. |

That should be a requirement of every production in every theatre. Strong disagree. The moment they start telling me I can't pass the idle time before a show starts and during the interval doing useful stuff on my phone and instead have to wait twiddling my thumbs, is when they can do one. |
