Obviously v off-topic but I use the network 'Three' and have noticed over the last few months that my signal around Covent Garden, Piccadilly etc has been very poor. I was meeting some friends last week and had no way to tell them where I was (had to go into Boots and nick their wifi). Does anyone else have this issue, specifically on Three or other networks? Maybe it's time for a change.

This also happens to me whenever I visit central London and I'm on 3 too - it's annoyingly frustrating especially as I nearly always have full signal (although I recently read somewhere that signal bars actually show proximity to a mast rather than signal strength/speed, not sure how accurate this is, but if it is true it helps explain why you can have full signal but not do anything).
Perhaps this is different to what you've been experiencing though... I put it down to being in a city centre with lots of phones vying for the signal...

Again on Three, and even out in Hammersmith I often can't get signal. Have to wander up and down until it either picks up or I find a public wifi.
Will be switching from them after my trip to the US.

Did the merger between Three and Vodafone go ahead?
Not that it would make any difference to me. Where I live, the signal is just as bad from both.

I'm so glad this has been brought up as I have also a Three customer and was in London in June and August and on both occasions I struggled a lot of the time with signal. Very frustrating. I had assumed that because Three shares signal with Vodafone (I think?) that it would be a lot better but apparently not.

My carrier uses the Three network and it is consistently and reliably AWFUL in the West End (and any other busy place).
I’m on a cheap tariff but I’d happily switch to a more expensive carrier for better signal.
Before Pygmalion tonight I couldn’t even open my emails to get my ticket so had to wander round to find a Wi-Fi network I could join.

Sounds very much like it's a Three issue. I've been loathe to change it as I'm on a ridiculously cheap tariff but I guess if it doesn't work then it's not really a bargain!
Thinking of changing to Giffgaff which uses the O2 network so please shout if that's equally bad.

I’m on Tesco which uses O2 and I usually don’t have any issues in London - completely different story where I live in Surrey, and 99% of the time can’t do anything using 4G (if I even manage to get 4G).

I only switched from GiffGaff to O2 as I needed to move to a contract which included free roaming abroad due to work travel. The fact they share the same network is the reason I chose O2.

Three is horrible in the West End, but gets me reception at home (which must be on an awkward corner).
Only just made it into The Book of Mormon today after Three wouldn’t connect and all I could get was the TodayTix confirmation email which showed the seat number but still needed to connect for the QR code. The venue Wi-Fi rejected my saved credentials too. Annoying thing was I’d had everything open earlier.
The kind people at the Box Office did print my ticket and let me in but it was much more complicated than necessary. First time I’ve ever had problem. I have had slow displaying e-tickets before, but they’ve always come through.
(and yes, I know I should take a screenshot in advance)

This thread has convinced me to finally take the plunge and bin my current SIM deal. Switching to O2. What a luxury it will be to check emails on the go again!

Didn't get any reception with O2 on Shaftsbury, and sadly I had digital tickets for Les Mis. Had to walk down to McDonald's to use their wi-fi just to get a screen grab. Thank goodness I was early. You would think that certain wealthy theatre owners could provide free wi-fi in their lobbies and auditoriums as a courtesy to their ticket holders, but no...

I also work in Bloomsbury and ended up not being able to get internet anywhere around work or town when I was with 3 (despite my phone nearly always saying that I had good signal). I have been with EE for over a year now and am delighted with the super duper high speed 5g I get which is faster than the fibre optic broadband in my house!

I'm led to believe, by my techie brother, that the only downside of these services that piggy back onto more mainstream networks is that the customers of the 'actual' network get preferential treatment in terms of access so if there is already poor signal or an awful lot of people around, you may find yourself with slower / less available internet than someone standing next to you who is on O2 itself. Not sure about the real world impact of this though!

I'm with EE, and found them pretty good everywhere I go. I was previously with O2, found them great in the London area, however massive congestion issues most other places I go (such as Swansea, Cardiff and Manchester city centre) - so could get a great signal, but no data - so couldn't access emails or use apps to order in pubs - although if your phone allows you to manually drop to 3G it will work (mine doesn't). O2 own GiffGaff and provide the network for Tesco and Sky. While the rumours are network operators give preferential treatment to their own customers, it is not the case.

First day with O2 was today and noticed a marked improvement when out and about in the West End. The only time it struggled was in the theatre auditorium. Only downside is that O2 have been a bit useless at switching my number over!

True, however, filthy rich West End producer who owns country houses in addition to multiple theatres can certainly afford to either:
1) spring for wi-fi access for audience in said theatres, considering how much tickets cost.
2) find a telcomm company willing to provide wi-fi for sponsor rights in lobby. Saw this at an outdoor concert last summer. Wi-fi proudly provided by an auto manufacturer so they could be featured on electronic billboards throughout the venue. Obv no naming rights to the venue itself.
The Live Nation concert venue where I work does provide free wi-fi in the venue since we rely on digital tickets for about 80 pc of the audience. Those on guest lists or who have outdated "dumb phones" still get paper tickets.
