I don't know him personally but have friends who do. Seems there's a split in the local theatre community between those who gloat/are out for blood a bit, and those who are more sympathetic thinking that one small thing can lead to another and they can see how it could happen.
Having worked a fair bit in grants/fundraising I think this is also a call for the fact that reporting/post award support is very important to protect public/charitable money. I haven't studied the ins and outs but I think it's a sign ACW needs to be more supportive post-award/vigilent.
I'm not defending what he's done by any stretch, particuarly when so many scrabble around for any funding at all. But as with much in life it's complicated!

I don't know how costly and effective it would be to beef up the post-award reporting and auditing. Another complication is the number of different funding bodies involved, both actually and fictitiously.
Reading the news media reports, I'm impressed by how the theatre companies he defrauded investigated what was happening, which must have been most awkward for them as he was acting in a position of trust. This must be a huge embarrassment for National Theatre Wales who employed him for a number of years before he struck out as an independent producer.

Agreed it is difficult, and could be seen as penalty for those 1000s of honest grant holders. What's impressive is the scale of this one, and that he did manage to hide it from so many. NTW certainly must be embarressd by this, and perhaps are doing some careful checking of the years he was with them as well. |

Typical case of someone discovering that they could get away with something 'just until I can get it sorted out' and it then becoming their standard operating procedure.
