Sad to hear Barry Humphries has died aged 89 from complications following a hip operation. Another great comic who could hold an audience in the palm of his hand. RIP.

I only got to see him twice over the years, once at Cadogan Hall with his Weimar Cabaret show in 2016 and then at the Palladium with Rob Brydon in 2019, but he is/was a legend and will be missed: there are too few people like him about on stage and screen these days.

Yes. One of the funniest of all time. Gave so many people so many laughs. I'll miss him. And her. RIP. 💔

He was part of our cultural scene for a very long time

So many great people seem to have gone in the last year or so. I saw Barry twice. First time at Drury Lane many, many years ago. We sat in the front row and during his Les Patterson routine we had to open our umbrellas to cover our clothes from all the spitting. 2nd time, many years later at the Palladium and he gets audience members up on stage and they have a real BBQ!

I saw Barry at least twice I think. I remember laughing so much the first time. He really did have the audience in the palm of his hand and was so quick witted. A master of his craft. RIP.

Saw him in the 1980’s - an absolutely brilliant stage performer, surely one of the best ever - hilarious with a slightly sinister edge.

I only saw him once, a few years back at Manchester Opera House. Marvellous. He spoke at the end about how it meant a lot to him to perform there as his family were originally from Manchester.
I wish I’d appreciated him and Paul O’Grady more when they were both regularly on primetime telly.

I saw his show "Look at Me When I'm Talking to You" in the mid 90s and it was a tour de force. First half was Sir Les and the lovely Sandy Stone monologue, and the second half was a no holds barred Dame Edna extravaganza! Around 3 hours of sublime comic bliss. RIP Barry, genius, you were the best.

Such a talented man- so quick!
Same Edna- the suburban housewife mega star is no more!

A friend saw him, I think it was at the Sydney Opera House, he asked if there was anyone there from the old country and they made the mistake of putting their hands up. Even so they really enjoyed the show. Sorry to see him go. My favourite character was Madam Barry the clairvoyant.

As I was growing up in Australia, he was always there. Do quick witted as Dame Edna.
I am also very much aware of Sir Les Petterson and Sandy Stone.
You mention Madam Barry the clairvoyant. I too have never heard of this character.
When he did his farewell tour a couple of years back at The Palladium and he also portrayed anther character that I'd never seen, or heard of. In fact I couldn't even tell you the characters name.
What I can tell you was that he was a predatory (possibly a pedophile) who wore an ankle tag and there a a younger Thai man playing the piano and the moment he saw him the character went straight to him, like a magnet but as he got too close, his ankle tag went off.
Again, I'd never seen or heard of this character.

He was Sir Les' clerical brother Gerald (or Gerard?)

Dame Edna's cutting obituary of the talentless, exploitative manager who held her in a lifelong contract, one Barry Humphries, is a brilliant last laugh from beyond the grave.

Been watching every clip I can find, I don't think Comic Genius does him justice, the speed of his wit was astonishing.
A personal favourite is when Dane Edna met Cher. I love when the big American celebrities completely get the character and just go with it:

The Memorial Service for Barry Humphries, held on the 15th December at the Sydney Opera House, is available to view in full on YouTube. Very moving, some fine tributes, and of course some laughs as well. You are missed Barry !
