I've been twice to the luxurious takarazuka theater of dreams. Both times,the first half of the show was sentimental moralistic with a very missable uninteresting plot with silly heroes and heroines and good defeats the tories every time. The same plotline no matter what the subject. The opulent feather-full song and dance after the interval is why you go. Dazzling.
Audience almost exclusively female, whether in big groups or otherwise. No prob being male! There is/was a wall outside covered in a mural of dancers posed in a line. Very popular for audiences to pose in front of. Performances daytime only when I went. 30 mins from Osaka. There's also a tokyo branch near Tokyo Station which gets productions after the original takarazuka. Audience behaviour: perfect. Lean forward and a big card in English is put before your eyes by a v attentive usher telling you you're blocking view of person behind. Culturally, most fascinating thing was how autographs were/are organised - v formal. Plus loads of excessive present-giving to the stars , each of whom seems to have an attendant to carry for them - female of course. No English at all when I went. Gomen nasai.
