I've got to say, I think this was the best thing I saw during my recent NYC trip. It's not a big budget musical, just one man and a band at New World Stages, singing and telling the story of Rent and Anthony Rapp's own personal journey.
Completely engaging and poignant. If you don't get chills hearing Anthony singing "There is no future, there is no past", you just aren't old enough. And, although I never saw the original production of Rent live, this is as close as you'll ever get.
When I arrived, it looked like the theatre was only about half full, but then a large group of teenagers arrived and filled up al the seats. I presume they were on a study visit, but I've no idea what they made of it all. They were perfectly behaved.
An intimate show, not too expensive, only one act, and only on for a limited time. Don't miss this one.
