I saw this in its second week, thanks to a rush ticket. I presume it's selling well. It was sold out and someone outside was desperately asking people on the way in the hope they might have a spare ticket.
Having not yet seen A Strange Loop, I didn't really know what to expect but this is really a musical of two (long) halves, the first seemingly presenting interlocking fictitious 1980s style soap opera scenes that don't make any sense, the second largely building to a political rant, presumably not relevant to many of the audience who would choose to voluntarily spend their money on this type of musical (ignoring perhaps someone near me who said she had no idea this was going to be a musical). The music is quite reasonable.
I'm glad I saw this, as there are a few of these winding plays about, but it's rare anyone takes the time to add music to them. This could well be one of those musicals that wins loads of awards and is hailed by all as a genius piece, but no one can quite explain why. Or it may not be.
There are lots of references in this I just didn't get. Maybe you just have to be an American of a certain age?
There are plenty of interesting video scenes filmed as well, which you can watch before the start or during the interval.

The person/people you saw outside asking for tickets is no doubt part of the group of elderly/elderly-ish people who do this at every show, every night. They don’t want to BUY a spare ticket, no they’ll never spend a penny on Theater, they demand them for free and they are the most entitled and rudest people you could ever encounter.

I thought this was probably the weakest musical I saw on my trip over the past two weeks. I liked act one for sure, the title number was fun, little bit of a Heathers vibe. Tarra Conner Jones brilliant. But act two? What a total and utter mess I found it. Totally incoherent to the first act and just seemed a huge tangent. There’s a good musical in there, it just needs to be brought to a more coherent level.

Yes. It needs a sculptor other than its creator to come in and chisel away to find the quality show that I think is currently buried.
