I think a problem with theatres themselves offering free tickets is that their customers who paid in advance and full price might feel annoyed (thus the secrecy demanded of seat filling sites.)

I think a problem with theatres themselves offering free tickets is that their customers who paid in advance and full price might feel annoyed (thus the secrecy demanded of seat filling sites.) ...and it ends up potentially suppressing sales in the first place as people think "I won't book now because I might get a discount/free tickets later." Given so few shows sell out at the moment - even at previous hotspots like the Donmar - more people would just wait and see.

The Wales Millennium Centre sometimes has priority booking and offers for members/friends of WMC. I think it depends on the venue.
