The Guardian article seems to have disappeared, alessia. Can you tell us more?

Has anybody seen this yet? By the sound of it, it seems to be getting great reviews and standing ovations.
I only watched the film last night so interested to see how it works on stage!

Seen it. I’d say I’d agree with the guardian review. It’s a solid adaptation of the film but the film isn’t famous for strong writing and that shows on stage. You end up with heavy handed monologues/scenes explaining emotional backstory and even one on the nose monologue rant. For my money the characters are too simplistic to get proper emotionally involved in and too passive. It’s strong when it turns kafkaesque and explores the confusing universal credit system but doesn’t lean into that enough. The standing ovations are more a show of anger toward government and the choir applauding the sermon than recognition of great theatre. The staging is good and dynamic, the tweets projected add a lot and the performances are all strong. If you love the film then you’ll be happy with it.

Hi everyone, I’m seeing this on Thursday evening with my nan. However she is very short and we’re front row of the stalls, has anyone sat here and could let me know if the stage is high or is it more level with your face. Thanks very much!
Also, opening night is tonight!

undeuxtrois - just got back now and the stage isn’t too high. The set is on a platform in the middle of the stage where most of the action takes place. There is a video screen at the top of the set. Being front row wasn’t an issue for me (I’m 5ft 7) and nothing was missed from my seat.

Wow what an incredible play. Tears were streaming down my face more than not! Entire cast incredible and the play so relatable. I hadn’t seen the film prior so went in blind and my heart is broken. The messages from politicians displayed on the screen made me so angry because they have no clue what it’s like to rely on UC and be so desperate you have to sell yourself. Incredible of the theatre to have a food donation point too. Everyone around me was crying by the end.
