We've lost one of the greats.
She's died a few days away from her 97th birthday.
Tough news to hear, so glad I saw her live in Blithe Spirit. Will never forget being there for closing night.

And a little known fact. There is an estate in Poplar East London named after her father who was a Labour MP. The Lansbury Estate. When she was over to do Blythe Spirit she visited a school on the Estate to meet the pupils.

I pray she’s up there as Mrs. Lovett teaching The Queen how to bake the worst pies in London.
What a corse enterprise, popping pussies into pies!

This is heart breaking. A true living legend. Wow. What a career, what a life.
Was anyone lucky enough to have seen her in Gypsy?

My friend saw her in Gypsy and I asked him what was she like… He said ‘ I was in the front row and it was like sitting in front of Concord!’He said he had never soon so much power and electricity coming off a stage, and he had seen everyone… all the greats.

BBC did a little tribute on the news at 6am but apart from a brief mention of Blythe Spirit they didn't mention her stage career at all. Of course us MT people mainly associate her with all those wonderful musicals she was in but, I guess, a lot of people will mainly know her for TV and film.

I suppose inevitable when the vast majority of her stage work was in New York.
In the UK it's like she goes from Manchurian Candidate to Bedknobs, and other 70s films, then straight to Murder She Wrote and the four Tony's she won it that time are ignored!

It's impossible to sum up such a long and varied career in a few short minutes. I look forward to more clips coming to light over the next few weeks. Already today I've seen her Lady Bracknell in a reading from only 2019 and highlights from All About Eve as Birdie, with Stockard Channing and Calista Flockhart as Margot and Eve. And so many stories of how generous she was when it came to helping young performers or getting older actors cameo roles on Murder She Wrote so they'd keep their health insurance and benefits in credit.
