Broadway, a US tour and a Chicago run didn't hurt Wicked and Book of Mormon when they came to London and I doubt it'll affect Hamilton

GOD Running on Broadway A 2 year minimum contract in Chicago And a US tour All prior to the WE opening This show is gonna lose its shine well before coming to London By super saturating the market with itself I assure you It's gonna be a different story entirely in London I never thought I would say this, but Parsley does slightly have a point. I think it will succeed, but at the same time, the hype has been so much that there must be a point where people become sick and tired of it surely? Already has built in fan girls that are already gonna annoy the hell outta people because of the Cast Recording and the show itself.
It will likely be sold out for 6 months from opening even if the prices are insane. actually don't think it will be as big a hit as everyone is predicting. It is such an American story, I don't quite know if it will hit the same marks here as it does in the US. That said the music is great, and I am looking forward to seeing it, but also apprehensive because I don't know if it will live up to the hype it has gained and will be very disappointed if it doesn't.

People have been saying that people are gonna get sick of the hype since it opened off-Broadway 18 months ago. I'm sure some are sick of it. Enough people for it to have any effect whatsoever on the show's success? No. All we heard in the lead up to the Tonys was the show wont get that many nominations because the voters are sick of the hype. Then it broke the record in nominations. Then it was the show wont win that many because people are sick of the hype. Proven wrong again. Again, let's not put Hamilton fans into one group. They're not all 'fangirls'. A large proportion of them are grown men.

I understand that it is more than just girls who like Hamilton.

Not to mention that the fandom has crossed over to the general non-theatre public. Trust me-I am seeing it twice with people who HATE musicals but who have every intention and interest in seeing it.

Yeah, but if you use the word "fangirls" as a pejorative for all fans, then it's got built-in misogyny which just isn't cool. If "fan" (short for "fanatic") isn't strong enough for you, why not say "obsessed fan" rather than discreetly implying that it's *girls* who get all obsessive and weird?
Also, everyone, STOP WITH THE "IT'S TOO AMERICAN" NONSENSE. LES MIS WASN'T TOO FRENCH WHEN IT CAME DOWN TO IT, AND WE ALREADY HAVE A LOT OF AMERICAN INPUT IN OUR DAILY ENTERTAINMENT. SOMETHING BEING AMERICAN REALLY ISN'T A PROBLEM FOR US.

Yep, I have a friend who has never seen a musical before but wants to see it in London because of the hip-hop aspect. Funny as some naive people are arguing that rap isn't popular in the UK. Good news about Leslie!

Now we just need to wait half a decade until it's released

I wouldn't be surprised if it was the full decade.

Wicked is basically everything you mentioned in your post above and that's done just fine...

Wicked is basically everything you mentioned in your post above and that's done just fine... Yes, but Hamilton is based literally on the guy that founded America. Wicked is based on a fantasy book that reels from another book and, to an extent movie, that are some of the most popular books and movies out there. It had a basis for its popularity here. What I was suggesting is are people gonna want to see a musical about the guy who founded America?
And it is not me saying it won't be popular or successful, I am under no disillusion that it won't be. I just don't think it will be as big as some has been suggesting.

musicals don't have to be about household names to be popular look at evita / musicals don't have to be about local historical events to be successful look at les miserables.

Again, didn't say it wouldn't be successful. Just said I don't think it will be as successful as people may think.

I do wonder how London audiences will be reacting to some of the songs in light of the EU referendum, notably What Comes Next and The Room Where it Happens (we want our leaders to save the day, but we don't get a say in what they trade away, we dream of a brand new start but we dream in the dark for the most part), immigrants we get the job done etc. I think if anything it's made the show more relatable to Londoners and easier to understand the context. Granted, their independence made a lot more sense.

The basis of Wicked's popularity here WAS the hype from across the pond. Same with Mormon. I can promise you, the excitement and hype of it coming over wasn't because there was a new musical about some characters from the Wizard of Oz.

I wish it nothing but success, as I think the music is great etc, and it is probably better than most of the stuff that comes here from Broadway. I reserve full judgement of course until I see it. I hope we here have more sanity than the Broadway forums and we do not become simply the Hamilton forum. I am already nervous to see it because of the over hype and over publicity. It made the performance at the Tonys very underwhelming.

It made the performance at the Tonys very underwhelming. I fail to see how this could ever become the Hamilton forum when this forum works differently where there's only one thread for each show. If people don't want to read about Hamilton or its hype, they only have to scroll past this one thread. Anyway, until you see it you can't say it's 'over hype'. Most people who have seen it think it is worth the hype. The Tonys performance was effected by sound issues, censoring in the wrong places and Lin being over-emotional due to the lyrics 'take the bullets out your gun' etc. on the day of the Orlando shootings. As well as the fact that no performance in a musical works as well as being in the theatre. 24:00 of this video explains what I mean about the hype, bear in mind Michael Riedel is probably the most renowned Hamilton hater.

Just to clarify, I am not a Hamilton hater. I really enjoy what I have seen and heard thus far, bar the Tony's performance. And I understand Lin being emotional because of the circumstance so that was taken into account.
I have watched that video previously and I agree that I should wait until I see it to judge whether it is over-hyped but what I mean by the over-hype is that it has been publicised everywhere, everyone is talking about the Broadway production, it won a ridiculous amount of awards etc... it is being made out to be the second coming of Christ. Which makes me nervous to see it as when something it that over-hyped, usually it can only live up to expectation or fall lower than the expectation it has been given. So I am nervous to see it because I really don't want to be disappointed because of all the over-hype of it.

Has anyone on this board argued that it's going to be a hit in the UK with the same fury as in the US? We've been fairly reserved in our predictions here IIRC.
And one upside to "hype": it's a sign that a work of art has spilled over into broader culture and is attracting the attention of writers and audiences who might ordinarily have missed out. People can like or dislike Hamilton itself but a show that's bringing in new theatre audiences based on the strength of its music and writing rather than big name stars or special effects seems like an unmitigated good thing for the stage.

That, I am completely here for. We need a wider range of people visiting the theatre, especially younger people, to keep the art form alive!

Yes, but introducing new people to the world of theatre is a great thing regardless.

So I am nervous to see it because I really don't want to be disappointed because of all the over-hype of it. I understand that you're not a hater, don't worry. Even if you were, that is your right and opinion. I think people on this thread are just bored of having this debate now (whether it will be successful here, to what degree etc.). All of the points have been debated numerous times and I doubt anyone will have anything new or relevant to say on the matter. The truth is, as with any show, none of us know, but it is unlikely to be unsuccessful considering in another part of the world it is potentially the most talked about a musical ever has been in its first 18 months. As for you being nervous to see it, maybe you should try and stop reading about it so much. I know it's everywhere on theatre websites, but perhaps it would lower your expectations if you weren't reading this thread and seeing how much people who have seen it love it. Please don't misconstrue this as me trying to say 'stay out'. Everyone has a right to go into any thread and state their thoughts, positive, negative or neutral. I just think for your sake it might calm your nerves about expectations if you weren't exposing yourself to the hype as much. If it makes you feel any better, I was nervous about the hype back in August the first time I saw it and was completely satisfied. If you enjoy the music, there will be little for you to dislike, as that is the most controversial aspect of it due to a lot of people not being able to accept rap music or at least rap music in the theatre. It's unlikely that you're going to have a strong aversion to the choreography or the lighting for example. Of course, we don't know who the cast will be and unfortunately that can make or break a performance and the quality of it.
