I clicked on the Plymouth Theatre Royal link and it came up with '404 Oops, something went wrong'. I think I've subscribed ok though.

Sadly website links are not working. Registration for page takes you to a Rick Astley video on YouTube and if you click link to 'Get More Info' on Plymouth opening nothing happens. I have feeling the site was not mean to be 'live' yet. Is the website legit? Seems odd that a professional website would rick roll people on a link? Also the text logo at the top of the page is in a box, looks a bit copy past. And the main show logo itself is just a copy of the book/movie logo. Just looks a bit surprisingly amateur for a major professional production.

Left field choice but Southampton was meant to be the out of town try out for Chitty but they eventually decided to open cold in London. So it could be anywhere really 🤣 Plymouth could be another one. All depends on if ATG are involved or not I guess. Plymouth is a producing house at least, like The Curve & TR Bath but all just sound unlikely for something as ‘glamorous’ as Prada. Just putting this here and giving theatrefan62 a round of applause. In total shock at The Dominion though. 🎉x

It’s all a very anticlimactic way to announce this. They should have had a tighter grip on the website going live etc!

The Dominion?!
I would presume the Hannah Waddingham rumours are true and/or they have some other stunt casting going on because the Dominion is a wild choice.

I'm fairly sure Plymouth has a massive rehearsal space on site and a set workshop so they can effectively pick everything up and relocate there for X amount of months to get it ready all in one place - so it makes sense.

Yes, it’s been a major producing house for over 40 years for the reasons you state.

I remember seeing Copacabana open down in Plymouth with Gary Wilmot. Been producing for ages but lost their way over the last couple of decades.

I think the first UK tour of Mary Poppins debuted in Plymouth as well.

Seriously. Maybe Elton is playing the Tucci role. …or Tucci is playing the Tucci role (whilst offering private cooking demonstrations in the Royal Lounge?). If rubbish that suffered godawful reviews like We Will Rock You can run for a decade in The Dominion, there is hope for this show. The Devil Wears Prada is a wildly popular film and a lead like Hannah Waddingham would be one helluva hot ticket. My only fear is that this will attract the hen party crowds who like to have 25 cocktails before they even arrive at the theatre and generally ruin the evening for everyone else around them. Lets hope I am wrong.

Wouldn’t TDWP appeal more to the gay crowd than the hen party crowd? It’s fashion and glamour version of Pygmalion with a witty gay and total bitch as central characters. Ifs it’s done well it will go right over the hens heads.

I think it’s great that finally, a big new show is going into the Dominion.
I imagine thought that it will attract the hen parties and badly behaved oiks. And the gays.
Will be interesting to see where they price it. That’s a lot of seats to fill

I'm pleased the Dominion is at last getting a new show rather than the umpteen revivals of Elf,Dirty Dancing,White Christmas or Grease. It has become a bit of a white elephant's graveyard but with the new Crossrail station and general hub to Oxford Circus/Tottenham Court Road the theatre is in a good position. Also I feel there's no such thing as a bad theatre. I'm old enough to remember the New London/Gillian Lynne being classed as a "lepers hideaway" and then Cats premiered there. If its a good show an audience will find it. Same as the Shaftesbury. Gosh, I do! I loathe The Adelphi (not a good seat in the house, the sound is consistently dreadful, the most uncomfortable seats in the known universe) for instance. There was the time a rat scuttled past me at the Wolverhampton Grand Theatre… *in the toilets*… then got to my seat and it had gnaw marks on the cover. I then sat through the dullest, most phoned in performance of Blood Brothers imaginable, and was in a thoroughly bad mood… I don’t like The Dominion in the same way I don’t like the Shaftesbury Theatre. It feels like a soulless barn, combined with the fact I’ve seen an awful lot of rubbish in them. I actively think twice before seeing shows at either simply because I am dreading visiting them… Anyway, didn’t mean to go off topic with that rant! I think an out of town tryout is essential for this show after the bad notices and poor box office it did last time, and the more regional houses involved the better, in my view: it’s good for British theatre generally and provides a glimmer of hope for venues when it comes to future ACE funding arguments.

I think the Adelphi is the ugliest auditorium in London. Worse even than Trafalgar Theatre. It needs absolutely gutting.

The Adelphi clearly isnt that unpopular as it's always sought after by producers, likewise the Prince Edward.
The Dominion's issue has always been the capacity, I think they should find a way to reduce its capacity to say 1600-1700 seats, maybe a Drury Lane style renovation is needed.

Sorry - what I meant by a "bad" theatre is it's location in the West End not the state of the venue once you are through the doors. I can't stand the Savoy with it's cramped catacombs of corridors to get to your seat and once you get there they are so upright it's like being on a medieval torture rack. The Dominion is right next to Tottenham Court Road, not exactly hard to get to.

The issue at the top of most producers lists is the capacity of an auditorium. Too many seats & it doesn’t sell out; too few and you miss out; then too many circles to staff gives you wage bill headaches at quiet times. The Adelphi, Savoy & more recently the Shaftesbury all teeter on the perfect break-even balance around 1400, likewise the Prince of Wales being stuffed into only 2 floors have always made it popular (even when it only had 2 ladies toilets lol). I’d expect to see areas specifically off sale in the rear stalls & circle to keep the atmosphere up front, then added if demand warranted it.

I mean the film isn't really a classic, and is nearly 20 years old, I doubt this will sell unless big names are involved?
