Thinking back to I'd do anything I always thought Francesca Jackson was very good. I loved Jodie and was glad she won, but Francesca really sold that song. She’s an excellent talent! I saw her in a Kenwright Barry Manilow musical - Can’t Smile Without You? We should see more of her. Be good to get her into EastEnders too. |

We're all discussing about who should play Fagin and Nancy, but what about Bill Sykes? One person who comes to mind that could work is Andrew Lincoln. I don't think Sykes necessarily needs to have the best vocals and I can imagine Lincoln pulling the role off well. He can be intimidating and give off the impression of a person you don't want to mess with. Although his schedule will probably get in the way, but who knows. Michael Jibson. Years ago I was in am dram production of Oliver in Hull (me, me, me) I was shuffling around uncomfortablly in the chorus and MJ was our excellent Dodger (his brother was Oliver). After that they both went on to be boys in the Palladium production and 20 odd years later he gets Oliviers for Our House and Hamilton |

I was never sold on Jessie as Nancy during the show, nor am I now. She has already shown that her talents massively outstretch this role and it would be a massive waste of potential. I always felt so sorry for CM that the public went the obvious route with JP. It was right at the time but not exactly star making, I won’t expect to see Jessie on Celebrity Come Dine With Me any time soon but really look forward to seeing her in one of the forthcoming big budget musicals being made.

I love Oliver! but I'm not particularly interested in another revival - especially one from Cameron. I'd be interested in a brand new production, but I expect we'll just get a scaled down remount of a previous show. I can imagine it now...'MORE SPECTACULAR THAN EVER' with a cast of 5. I hope Poppins gets to stick around for a bit longer... |

I walked out of Oliver at half time. It was no charisma Samantha Barks and full of himself Neil Morrissey who had the absolute nerve to insert a “joke” about Bob the Builder into the script. Added to that the overdone cor blimeyness of it all and it was all embarrassingly dreadful. I HATED it.
This was the run where CM turned up one night at The Palace to announce that SB had bagged the role of Eponine in the film.

I think that people warmly remember the (mostly) bright cheery movie and the ear worm tunes. Is this dark and really quite dreary production meant to brighten our spirits? I agree that it’s time to have a crack with a different production more akin to the film once lockdown lifts if it really is to be revived again. I’m quite sure that purists would disagree but I wouldn’t revisit it in its current state. Whilst Neil Morrissey adlibbing sounds like my worst nightmare, I think they could cast Biggins & get Arlene in to liven up the choreo without cheapening it too much.

To continue suggestions on who could play Fagin, perhaps maybe Warwick Davis? The only musical he appeared in (as far as I'm aware) was 'Spamalot' and I was thinking that he could potentially make a good Fagin. Sure he doesn't have much musical theatre experience and is usually typecast, but I feel a role like this could probably break that typecasting, if he pulls it off that is.
In fact, why not allow more actors with disabilities a chance at being in big West End shows, not just those with dwarfism? Despite how far we've come, there's still so fewer roles.

A lot of theatres are not equipped backstage to be fully accessible for a wide range of disabilities sadly.
It is a significant barrier to anyone with mobility issues with the large numbers of steps and lack of lifts in many older theatres.

I wish more producers and architects would consider these barriers and how to break them, so more people with disabilities can experience a show like everyone else. I know it would be difficult to implement these in older theatres. But what if (and this is a very big IF, as we don't know what theatre will look like in a post-COVID world) new theatres were built, but with more accessibilities backstage, front of house areas and auditoriums? |

Just adding my thoughts on a potential Oliver! revival...
I love this show so much, and I loved the Drury Lane production - my first visit there and is probably my favourite West End theatre. However if Mackintosh is to bring it back, I would not be surprised if it was the Laurence Connor tour production from 2011-13, which was similar to Drury Lane production...which was similar to the Palladium! I wouldn't mind if this was the case, but also maybe it could be a good opportunity for a completely new version.
Also whilst the Prince Edward would be one of the most likely theatres size-wise to bring it back to, and this maybe a very pedantic point here - but I feel like it would be an odd choice with its 1930's art deco design would clash with the Victorian setting. As I say, a pedantic point that maybe people might not necessarily care about but Mackintosh has previously expressed how much a show has to feel right in the right theatre.

I guess Oliver is guaranteed to put audiences on seats, what new shows are not. I think this will happen for a while yet as tourist numbers are still down and theatres rely on domestic audiences and what they know they like. It's a shame for those developing new shows but I guess the business that is show is a business and bills have to be paid. Covid has a lot to answer for and it's effects will last for some time.
