I would like to see Phil Davis in a play, but what with the Old Vic version also coming up, and the Jim Broadbent one a couple of years ago (I'm positive there have been plenty of others in recent years that I'm forgetting) I'm not really that excited about seeing any of them - can't we have a stage version of A Muppet Christmas Carol?

The WoS press release calls this a 'pantomime' and apparently this will be a refreshed reinterpretation, with Dickens himself turned into a character; other characters include 'Mrs Snapchat' and 'Uber'. Hmmm..

Plus I'm pretty certain teachers (especially if they teach drama) will introduce the playwright as well as the play. Not sure about the modern elements, and not sure we'll get another Nick Nich but I'm quite excited about this and Twelfth Night. On a slightly off topic but on topic moan: why do the RSC announce RST show casting and leave the San casting till fairly last minute. Surely they've cast Imperium by now at least in part. |

A Brummie kid probably knows enough. 😉 I did a quick straw poll of 4 London 7-14 year olds and not a single one knew what Uber was - why should they ? How often do they use taxis ? How many of them are wringing their hands about the exploitative gig economy ? How many of them spend half the year in USA where Uber is a big deal ? |

Do they need to know about Uber? Pantomime works on the two levels: chuck the custard pies for the kids and double entendre for the parents. The RSC having a funny name moment. They had Ocadus in Vice Versa and was it Deliveradus or someat in Titus A. It is mildly amusing.

Back from 3rd preview. First of all I've not seen the Old Vic production so can't comment.
This to my mind is a hit, sure fire cast and production. Great doubling of roles so echoes are heard through the play, a brilliant set and some wonderful heart rending moments and ones of laughter.
The modern names do not do anything other than give the nameless names. Edgar has crafted an original and inventive framework that pulls themes out.
However most probably going to be a marmite show as I'm sure others will disagree about all of the above.

Saw today's matinee
In comparison to the Old Vic production, a good deal of it was a straight presentation of the book, with some awe-inspiring use of production values here and there.
At times the production felt uneven. The Fezziwig scene went on for too long, and outside the story there are some scenes with Charles Dickens himself thinking up the story. They have no point apart from Dickens keep telling us that he is writing this to show his contempt for the exploitation of child labour (though when is this ever the main focus of the story)
Still David Edgar does bring an ending to the story that is heart-warming (if slightly confusing)

I was also a bit confused as to the ending. The timeline was a bit awry. And to be honest I thought a full monty RSC song was called for a la Doran in the Old Swan days. But it is a good show. Many of the cast are RSC debutants which is nice thing to see and the children are as always adorable. Recommend.
Just to say with the doubling of this play ( though of course this is an adaptation as is the Old Vic version ) and the two Macbeths coming up at NT and RSC, that both texts are on the GCSE syllabus so the more the merrier.

Two more versions of A Christmas Carol next Xmas - Bristol Old Vic and West Yorkshire Playhouse. And two more Macbeths this year - Tobacco Factory Theatres and HOME with Lyric Hammersmith. I agree with Lynette - the more the merrier. |
