Having seen Michelle Yeoh play a villain in Star Trek Discovery I’d say wait until Wicked Part 2 before you really judge her performance. She was easily the best thing about that series. Looked like she was having a ball giving proper old-school Bond villain level campness, while somehow managing to bring a bit of depth to a largely pretty rubbish series.

The soundtrack and 3 songs have hit the charts and broken some records(if you'll pardon the pun!)

Saw this today and agree with the praises here.

I feared this will be like the Hobbit movies where a lot of unnecessary padding was added, but apart from a few new scenes the material they already had was given more room to breathe with more time given to scenes. As @fluxcapacitator said I think I'm going to find the stage musical lacking in places now

I particularly liked in the ozdust ballroom when Glinda dances with Elphaba, and Cynthia Erivo shows Elphaba's barriers breaking down and Glinda hugs her when she cries. Also when Elphaba chooses to ask the wizard to help the animals rather than de-greenify her. I know not everything can be portrayed on stage but it's details like that shows how an adaptation should be done. Expanding on the material.

And it makes me hopeful that they will continue this with the second half as I find that to be the weakest of the two acts.

It was great to see Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenoworth, as well as Stephen Schwartz's cameo.

Defying gravity as others have said was the only disappointment with the added bits and the growing relationship Elphaba and Fiyero could have been fleshed out more. I also have a niggle with the musical - why isn't Morrible more concerned with Elphaba being sympathetic to Dillamond and talking animals if she and the Wizard want to use her for their means, regardless of her magical capabilities. That was a little more glaring for me in the movie when Morrible finds the sleeping class and the lion cub gone.

And if anyone thinks I'm nitpicking, I'm interested to see how Dorothy meets the scarecrow in the second film. Assuming of course they are going to show the Wizard of Oz storyline without a lot of deviation.

My next door neighbours have just taken me to see Wicked as a present for looking after their cat.
I loved it and that's the way to do a stage to screen musical. It was so loyal to the stage show.
Epic sets and the big dance numbers were fantastic.
I really knew very little about Arianna Grande and thought he was perfect for the part. Great comic timing. Cynthia, as always, sang the hell out of the score.
And I'd go again just to watch Jonathan Bailey.
This was an 11.30am screening and the cinema was packed, families were even split up as no seats together. I can't remember the last time I saw a full cinema. There were a few Bailey fans there who giggled away every time he was on screen and lots I'd oohing and ahhing and they weren't that young!
Really well behaved audience as well, no talking or noise during the film.
It also went a lot quicker than I expected and really sped past.
There was even a round of applause at the end which was quite special bearing in mind that this was Stratford, East London and not the west end.
As others have said it ends at exactly the right place.

I putting it out there- for his next project, let Jon. M. Chu's next project be the live action re-make of The Hunchback of Notre Damn.

Given his success with stage to screen musical adaptations, how about he makes a film of Chess. Maybe he could be the one to (finally) sort out the book.

I am not a cinema goer, must be the first time I’ve been to the cinema in maybe 4 years, seeing the Star Wars franchise no doubt. I saw this film at the IMAX Greenwich and had to say I kind of felt overwhelmed going in, out of my depth a feeling I don’t get in the theatre.

Anyway this show must have the longest interval.

I have never been a massive Wicked fan, even though I caught the matinee in Victoria on Wednesday, don’t get me wrong though I love the score. I mainly went to see this to see Cynthia Erivo, who I adore and if there is a person that deserves her success and that is Cynthia. I am afraid theatre has now lost her. I enjoyed all the performances, without making an opinion as cinema isn’t my thing really. Same with the film which I found enjoyable without going overboard. There was a lot of CGI though.

How long will it be before that Cynthia will be a EGOT holder?

Given the choice I prefer to sit in the stalls than the cinema, I might be just a sentimental man.

I loved the Wizard of Oz typeface, and the little nods to it — both visual and in the music.

I was concerned about the ages, but I think Ariana looks young enough and Cynthia just about gets away with it — helped by the make up I think. Jonathan Bailey absolutely doesn't but he plays the part so well I didn't mind.

Ariana's surely a shoo-in for Elle Woods if they ever do a film of the Legally Blonde musical!

A bit like Wicked the prequel to Chess could be done; Draughts.

I was planning on seeing this at the end of the week but it stops showing on Thursday at all the cinemas around me. That’s 2 Vue’s, an Odeon luxe and all the independents. I have to go into central to see it (which won’t work out for me and my partner). I can’t believe it’s stopping in cinemas already.

Cinema scheduling is based on what's coming out and how a film did the previous weekend. It'll be up by tonight or sometime tomorrow and I expect it'll have lots of showings as there's isn't much out this Friday.
