In stage to film musicals like this, the casting director is a thankless role, whoever is cast. I'd love to know who it got down to, in the final few. I dont even recall Erivo's name being mentioned for this at any point. Christine Baranski or Imelda Staunton for Morrible, although that might be too similar to Dolores Umbrudge. Joel Gray for the The Wizard. Mason Gooding for Fiyero. Kristin Chenoweth as Chistery Idina Menzel as The Midwife Ali Stroker for Nessarose Daniel Radcliffe for Boq Why are we casting a non-singer as Fiyero Sir?

He's not known for singing, but has a good voice and his star is on the rise, as they say.

Really pleased for this casting, it's a pity we didn't get the Anna Kendrick/Amy Adams pair we might have had if it'd come a few years earlier but time moves on. I wasn't a fan of Ariana when she was being touted as playing Elphaba, but I can see her doing a really interesting Glinda. And Cynthia has a real Elphaba energy, I'm there for that. Not sure how their singing voices will go in the role but we're not talking about a stage performance here, the film will be its own things and demanderates a very different set of skills.
The rest of the cast... I kind of think Helen Mirren would do a fine Morrible, but based on how they've cast the leads I don't know if they'll throw big acting names into those parts so it's anyone's guess I suppose.

I’ve been watching MAID on Netflix and Raymond Ablack keeps sticking in my mind as Fiyero. He played Young Simba in The Lion King so he’s no stranger no musicals.

The whole hating on James Corden thing is tiring. He doesn't cast himself in these things. You don't like him, then don't watch it.

That’s the problem - I think people would like to be able to watch it! I might be out, anyway, because of the casting so far. If Ariana learns to enunciate and the makeup can make me forget I’m looking at Cynthia Erivo, we’ll see. But James Corden would be the last straw.

I'm far from the biggest Corden fan but that petition is mean-spirited and unnecessary. All those people need to find proper problems to worry about.

I think the box office takings will cope of you decide to sit this one out. But you wont. You'll watch it at somepoint.

I don't give a damn about the box office takings, I care about whether I can enjoy something or not. And if I decide I can't enjoy this with the cast they've chosen, I won't bother with it. I haven't bothered with Dear Evan Hansen for that reason.

In Cats at least he was marginally better than Rebel Wilson, but she was dreadful.
I think part of why some have taken against him is begrudgery, but there's another part of me that feels like he seems like a pleasant chap but I don't see him as being particularly talented and I'm sure an unknown would have been better in almost everything he's done.
I haven't signed the petition... yet.

The casting of Ariana Grande is what dissuades me from seeing this. I find her singing style deeply unpleasant, and, if that's the sound the director is going for, I am clearly not in the target demographic.

Did you listen to the clip posted by Theatre Fan on the previous page? She is aware that different singing styles are required for pop and musicals, and capable of adapting her style to the material.

No I'd missed that. Thanks. Just listened, and, to be honest, I didn't find it particularly reassuring. Also, I disagree that Grande's singing style is "required" for pop, but it is the reason that there is so much unlistenable pop music around. It's instructive to contrast the styles of Lady Gaga and Grande on "Rain on Me", where a great pop song is ruined for me, when the latter comes in.
