Its the Broadway musical. I'm not sure if the film came before the show but its the first time in London and, I think, the UK. Film definitely came first (1992), but no one actually saw it... It was a major flop. Ahem! I think you’ll find at least two people saw it at The Prince Charles in 1993 because their now wife’s friend went out with Christian Bale, and (we 🙄) had to go and have a look. This was despite me telling her that it was the boy out of ‘Empire of the Sun’ and we could just rent that from the Blockbusters on Mill Hill Broadway rather than traipsing into town. I remember very little about it though 😂

I don't get the complaints of musicals being adapted from films or even revivals of classic musicals. To each their own…I, personally, just enjoy original ideas coming to fruition. To me, just taking a story that’s already been adapted into a movie and throwing some songs together to fit the storyline is pure laziness. Again, my opinion.

So many brand new musicals fail at the box office though down to unfamiliarity and, well, just nobody going. Adaptations of existing IP’s or of a particular artist give a ‘hook’ to interest people in. It doesn’t have to be born of laziness, more financial necessity. I know which I’d sink my money into.

Betty, a sort of musical
Could be worth a trip to Manchester this Christmas?

Betty, a sort of musical Could be worth a trip to Manchester this Christmas? This is one that interests me especially as it involves Maxine Peake.

I don't mind it as much as others, but it is nice to attend a show where you don't already have strong ideas about what you are likely to see. Musicals based on non-visual works (books, poems, etc) don't have quite the same challenge in that regard as ones based on works from visual forms of media.

I do half agree with this, and there are far more examples of musical adaptations that added nothing to the original material (Pretty Woman, I'm looking at you). But then when it's done right, the results can be brilliant. I'd argue that Hairspray, Legally Blonde, Kinky Boots and Priscilla are all far better as musical adaptations than their original non-musical forms.

I suppose I object to the suggestion that adapting existing material is laziness. We wouldn't have many shows if the rule of only original ideas are allowed for musicals.

Correct me if I'm wrong (and I very well may be) but was there not some talk some time back about making a musical of Houdini's life? I think (at the time) Hugh Jackman was associated with this.
Anyone know anything?

If we were to rule out every adaptation of R+J, there would be nothing left. Including the original R+J, which itself is an adaptation.

Anyone know anything? I believe Stephen Schwartz was attached to it originally as composer/lyricist, but sadly nothing came of it.

In terms of the Disney 'empire' it is my understanding that Hercules is the next to be stage adapted.
Not to sure whatever happened with Tangled.
(I've said it before and I'll say it again) personally, I think The Aristocats is ripe for a revamp/remake.

Hopefully the new production at Paper Mill Playhouse will lead to a commercial production.

I know The Lion King and Cats proved you can have non humans characters on stage but I'm not sure how The Aristocats would work as a stage show.

I'd quite like The Borrowers to be turned into a musical.
If we're talking about turning animated pictures, Barry Manilow's Thumbelina would be my pick.

Has anyone seen Diva: Live From Hell at the Turbine? It seems to be getting wonderful reviews. Saw today and it’s very good! Thought Luke Bayer was excellent, and good material too. Hope it had a future life - would be great for the Edinburgh Fringe.

Hope it had a future life - would be great for the Edinburgh Fringe. After asking the question I saw it myself, and wow! I also thought Luke Bayer was fantastic, seamlessly switching from one character to the next, showing off his impressive vocal ability, even donning tap shoes and doing a routine mid-song. I believe it's only on for another week at the Turbine.
