A huge congratulations to England women’s football team for their outstanding achievement tonight!!! 🏴⚽️ What a fantastic tournament it has been - even my Grandma has watched avidly, who hasn’t enjoyed a football match in her 80-odd years.

As a football foe even I found that last 5' tense. Incredibly well deserved, as the Lionesses have worked incredibly hard to raise the profile of women's football in recent years.

Well that was a tense few hours! Weirdly odd watch England play football and thinking you might actually win.
My dad is a football fan, though never really sure how much pleasure he derives from it and is firmly of the opinion that woman can't play football, shouldn't be on tv, blar, blar, blar, in fact something my brother in law has spouted to, well this championship has seen some beautiful football, a complete absence of crowd violence, crowds that weren't 99% white men and seemed to be much less spitting, cheating, ref intimidation and all that crap you get in the men's game.
Flipping brilliant.

What isn’t helpful, and I am saying this to educate rather than belittle, is when people constantly compare the men’s and women’s games. This doesn’t happen in any other sport, where women are valued on their own merits for their own achievements and aren’t constantly compared to men.
What these ladies have achieved is fantastic in its own right. The men’s game is completely irrelevant to the discussion and isn’t going anywhere.
Two forms of elite professional sport, both with two sets of players giving their all for their team.

But i'm not sure that's true. The history of women's football is the country is entirely wrapped with that of the men's. Indeed there was a time when it was supressed as they were deemed to be too good and showing the men up. I thought the points Alex Scott and Ian Wright raised after the match regarding investment, the venues that refused to host a match when it was proposed in 2017, the way the game runs is hugely relevant. And sadly other sports do compare women's to men's, when ever there is a prize disparity the whole thing comes up as a comparison as to the numbers of games played (tennis) or the viewing figures. And many women's experience of playing football or even supporting it is tinged with the influence of those who see it as a male only sport where woman have little place. Look at the fight the US woman's team have had regarding their salaries etc in comparison to their male counterparts whom they are much more successful than.
So while I agree this achievement should be valued on it's own merit comparisons will inevitably be made and this achievement should be used to move women's football and women's sport forward so that it can get closer to a point where it can be viewed as an entirety on it's own and has parity to that of men's.

Well done. It was a brilliant result.
Have to say I didn't watch it as I am not a football fan but I did watch the last 5 mins and the celebrations after.
Favourite bit was when one of the players was being interviewed and then just ran off with the mic to join the rest of the team to sing Sweet Caroline mid interview.
That was so funny.

I heard on the radio that some of the German media were suggesting that if she had been playing England would not have won. Oh dear, sour grapes! 🍇. And not very respectful to the rest of the German squad either. |

Pretty standard media fare. Terrible bad luck for her and a bit of luck for England but the German team was very strong and talented and very little between them in the end.
The press conference clip gives me a little glow too.

Loved it. Followed my women's team for years (Arsenal) but as someone who can barely remember 1966 this was as good as its ever got. I hope it will give a deserved boost to the women's game but for me it isn't about men v women, it's about the joy of playing and winning and bettering yourself. This team has laid down a huge landmark and achieved immortality. Onwards and upwards!

One really good goal by each team yesterday. Real top quality. If it was down to me I would make some changes. I would recognise the physical differences between sexes and look at a selection of smaller pitches, smaller goals, size four footballs and 35 minutes a half. |

Well it has and the ladies deserve all the accolades they got/get.
Furthermore i’m sure the ladies will be deservedly get on the celebrity tv circuit. I look forward to get to know them in due course.
