The iain Dale interview with Kemi Badenoch was interesting, especially as he didn’t ask her any questions about her opinions on LGBTQ matters. But that’s Iain for you, total hypocrite slobbering over the idea of a new Thatcher or Widdecombe despite the fact that they fundamentally disagree with his (and his husband’s) life choices. He is such a pompous, self serving creep. I prefer Paul Brand over Iain Dale personally.

I think Kemi is a shoo in for a Cabinet position, she did well in the Channel 4 debate.

I was just asked who the winners and losers were tonight.
The losers, I replied forlornly, the losers are the British public

Best reaction to Liz Truss so far tonight: "She's that substitute teacher who won't let anyone go to the toilet during class."

It'll be very interesting to see who remains in Cabinet and who'll be headed for the scrapheap. Johnson surrounded himself with mediocrity (if that's not too kind), but there are very few who seem competent let alone talented at the top of the Tory party. I imagine a Mordaunt Cabinet will probably try and do a clean slate, Not sure I’d call Andrea Leadsom as Chancellor and David Davis as Home Secretary a clean slate.

I think Kemi is a shoo in for a Cabinet position, she did well in the Channel 4 debate. I think she showed herself to be limited, and is already rowing back, ever so slightly, on her damaging climate change position. But we have to remember that several candidates will stand with no hope of becoming leader, but rather the hope of raising their profile and getting their ideas heard, especially with their target audience (not me). And that can lead to a cabinet position and getting a lot more air-time in the future to push their favourite policies. What she has failed to account for isn't just that the costs of not tackling climate change are huge, or that the same policies that will mitigate the impacts of climate change will also help us with our energy security and therefore general security, but that there are business opportunities. Money invested in energy efficiency or renewables this year will continue to pay back year after year. Money invested in those industries will boost the economy and we have the opportunity to be actual world leaders in a field that will continue to expand for many years. The intervention by Zach Goldsmith earlier yesterday was notable, and might be why she back peddled a bit last night. Her approach might appeal to the conspiracy theory part of the party, but even Tory traditionalists must realise its a diminishing voter base. After the hype Mordaunt was underwhelming, but the interventions by the likes of Lord Frost don't damage her in my eyes. As far as I'm concerned, he's incompetent with delusions of grandeur, so I don't rate his opinion. I'm deeply sceptical about a lot of the commentary and think it has more to do with who they think they can influence than who they actually rate.

Well surely that's the only way to explain how Truss has any support given she has been dreadful through this whole process.
After the debate it looks like its shifting towards Sunak again who did enough to beat relatively low expectations.

I wasn't expecting much from Sunak either, but thought he presented himself fairly well. The public polling I saw showed he was the 2nd most successful last night with the general public. He's been poor in media interviews and had struggled when challenged on policy, so I think he did well last night to pivot to his areas of comfort and use a lot of his rehearsed phrases. Whether or not his association with Johnson is too damaging for the public remains unclear.

I'm torn between Sunak and Mordaunt, the latter appeals due to a clean break away from the Johnson era but I think Sunak probably has the more experience and a clearer vision of what he wants to achieve. Plus it will give us the first PM who isn't white

Best reaction to Liz Truss so far tonight: "She's that substitute teacher who won't let anyone go to the toilet during class." Judging on how Liz dressed, I’m surprised she didn’t say “the lady is not for turning.”

Tugendhat is out.
Onwards to the next vote.

Tom Tugendhat was a pretty much establishment person - father a HC Judge, Uncle former MP, European Commissioner, Chairman of Abbey National throw in Tom's Reservist Army career which he seemed to name check every few minutes so you aren't getting anything than almost an identikit Tory.
That said he is the consensus best performer on debates and has huge foreign policy experience so would be a solid choice for the number 2 job at the Foreign Office or Defence Secretary.
Tom was also more a one nation (moderate Tory) so his votes are unlikely to go to Truss or Kemi. Rishi looks a shoe-in on the ballot paper. Penny will be nearer 100 votes as some of Tom's will migrate to her. So would Kemi's support get behind Liz if Kemi goes out today or could Kemi have the momentum to close on Liz ?

Rishi is a lock for the final two. It's really between Mordaunt and Truss for the other spot.

Badenoch is out. The gap between Mordaunt and Truss is a mere six votes.

Unfortunately this almost certainly means Truss or Mordaunt for the next PM. Conservative members will back either of them over Rishi. I really wanted to see a Rishi v Kemi final.

Kemi would only have got significant votes if Liz had gone out. I'm surprised more of Tom's votes went to Liz than Penny. Does it now mean most of Kemi'a votes go to Liz or is there a lot of discussions overnight who is the best stop Rishi candidate or might there even be lending of votes to potentially keep someone out of top 2.

Truss winning will ensure a Labour victory whenever the next election is.
