Four hours in and I'm sure I'm watching a different drama to the critics. They universally think it's the best thing ever. I think it's nothing more than okay.
Lucy Mangan, in The Guardian, practically exploded because she was able to use "speechifying" in the same sentence as Margaret Thatcher. No doubt she's now excused from Kings Place tea making duties for at least the next month!
For me, James Graham has a tendency to tell his stories too thoroughly. I thought it about Ink; I thought it about This House; I think it about Sherwood.
Am I right, or am I right?

It's not the best thing ever, but I'm glad to see the BBC doing a drama on the 'left behind' communities in a Bleasdale-ish vein. I'm enjoying it, but it's a bit slow and I'm not really engaging strongly in the characters in the way I did with Alan Bleasdale or Jimmy McGovern.

A friend from Nottinghamshire said to me really good it has been highlighted that not everyone from Nottinghamshire was a scab. Don't know what it means yet but made me smile

A scab was someone who refused to strike. The Nottingham coal miners were more productive than other parts of the country so wanted to work as they earned more money. Striking mkiners tried to intimidate them to strike butv when the police banged their heads together they squealed like lefties tend to do. Arthur Scargill was naive as he took the miners out on strike in the spring without a vote sfter being goaded to do so by Mrs Thatcher. Arthur's predecessor as NUM General Secretary Joe Gormley never lost a dispute as he always balloted on strike action and knew when to call a strike. He had got a very good deal for miners in 1981/82 before he retired.

I've actually heard a rumour Scargill was an MI5 agent as when and his rationale for calling the strike was the worse possible timing. I've known people who have met Arthur Scargill and said he was a thoroughly decent bloke but maybe believed in his cause too much.
Mick Lynch the RMT Union Boss is coming across very well in interviews and has calmly dismantled several interviewers when they try to put words into his mouth.

Never heard the MI5 agent one, he was supporting Mick Lynch's RMT strike last week. He's really good at keeping the act going after all these years. Would be funny though

Very unfortunate that the BBC has scheduled the penultimate episode for the same night that Andy is playing His matches have a tendency to end under floodlights with the roof closed.

Would be funny though It was more a theory than a fact about Arthur. He was very socialist apart from his luxury flat. He would support a fellow union leader with their strike but maybe looked like a bit of a dinosaur out there. Several Labour MPs supported the picket lines personally which they are entitled to do.

And there's going to be another series too! What?! Why? I've now finished it and it doesn't scream as something that needs a series 2. I enjoyed it but it did drag at times and the solution was a bit underwhelming.

Will start watching it over the weekend, assuming it finishes in the same period the 80’s, the next series would likely look at the impact for the next generation, division can last a long time. My family comes from near Bethesda which had one of the most acrimonious strikes at the turn of the last century and the divisions even though highly diluted remained well into the 70’s and is only now becoming history as no living relatives impacted by the strike are alive. tuc150.tuc.org.uk/stories/the-great-penrhyn-quarry-strike/

Yes, if they keep the same characters I'm not really sure where they'll go with them I'm sorry they killed off the young Tory candidate so early: that looked like it was going to be an interesting topic to explore, the red wall, blue wall, and it felt rather thrown away in a peculiar, tragic but shaggy dog storyline that didn't add anything to the overall political theme

The BBC announcement for the new series says "Cast to be announced", so I do wonder if S2 is going to be a completely new story set in the same environment (either that or they just haven't signed up the actors yet). I enjoyed this very much - great acting and an intriguing plot, and I was ok with the outcome even if there were a couple of holes I didn't look into too deeply. I didn't think this needed a second series, but given that S1 was so rooted in JG's upbringing I assume he thinks he has another story to tell.

Four episodes in and enjoying this Finished this last night, liked this a lot. Lindsay Duncan's role had the killer ideology line and Lesley Manville's speech at the end was very powerful

Why not put Wimbledon on BBC2 and leave peak BBC1 viewing in place. It was first round match not like a key SF or anything.

Absolutely loving this! It’s all over the place isn’t it? Part ‘GBH’, part horror film via a nervous breakdown. And that was before Lindsay Duncan rocked up and washed it all in a glossy sheen of quality. Can’t wait to finish it tonight!

Absolutely loved Sherwood. And while the story was perfectly landed in this series, I'm thrilled that they have commissioned another series. Whether it's a completely new story in Sherwood, or more stories with some of the same community, the writing and production means it's worth looking forward to. Happy Valley sets the standard. No pressure.

Spoiler: did they ever tell us why his wife's file was restricted in the end, or was it just a red herring?

Spoiler: did they ever tell us why his wife's file was restricted in the end, or was it just a red herring? She was some form of witness protection as her father was abusive and had tried to kill her.

Series 2 started last night and is - again - a brilliant watch for me. First episode is a bit 'setting up the conflicts', but I think this is brewing to be a corker. Superb cast - Lorraine Ashbourne is one of those actors who have a long and distinguished career without ever quite becoming a household name - from the 'old-hands' (Monica Dolan, almost unrecognisable and very chilling) down to the young'uns (Bill Jones is excellent). This is less about the past, more about present times. Definitely one that needs full attention, the plotting is dense.

When i saw this advertised I thought it was another Robin Hood remake so gave it no thought. It wasn't until later I realised what it was. Thank god for catch up and I can watch episode 1 later today. Loved the first series.
