Really like this casting but do wish that they bring back the spectacle of announcing a new doctor.
Those episodes where the doctor dies and you see for the first time who the new doctor will be are some of the best.
Releasing on a Sunday lunch time just isn't as fun.

The new doctor’s always been announced before the regeneration episode happens. It would be great to find out in the moment like that but I think they realise in practice they could never pull it off, someone would end up leaking it before the episode came out. I do agree they could have announced it in a more exciting way than a social media post though. |

Excellent casting, he’s a great actor.
I wonder if they were originally going to announce it at the BAFTAs this evening, I believe Jodie, Russell and Ncuti are all going to be in attendance. Perhaps there was a risk it was going to get leaked before then and they wanted to take control.
I agree it’s a shame they don’t do “event” announcements any more. I remember applying to be in the audience of a BBC show that was all about Doctor Who fans and their love of the show, with some special guests promised. As we took our seats the host told us we were about to be introduced to the next Doctor (which was Peter Capaldi)! The whole audience pretty much exploded with excitement that we were “accidentally” at this huge event, it was truly magical.

I wouldn't be surprised if the BBC weren't already aware that he has won the BAFTA and wanted to get this out ahead of time so it didn't look like he got it because of the win.

I suppose if they'd done it during the BAFTAs it would have been a distraction, but it would have been fun to have had a big reveal rather than just Twitter.

I thought the announcement was underwhelming, but doing it on BAFTA day when he was nominated and presenting an award meant it got talked about a lot and makes it easier for journalists writing about him to mention that he's BAFTA nominated without it sounding too shoe-horned. I've not seen him in any tv work, but there's an outside possibility I saw him when he was at the Dundee Rep, so for the time being I'm going to assume I spotted him before he was famous.  |

Oh God, I’d never give them that satisfaction, the racist cnuts. Funnily, you get quite a few Guardian types commenting on DM stories, in the same way you get DM trolls commenting on the Guardian. The point I was alluding to is that, despite their biased reporting on many things, I don’t think even they would get away with being snarkily “anti-woke” when reporting this. It’s a good actor getting a deserved part. They didn’t complain that Denzel Washington was too black to play Macbeth. It just seems a bit lazy to pre-empt they’re going to be horrible about it. Saying that, I’ll likely be proved horribly wrong by a vicious Jan Moir piece in the coming days. Especially if the new companion turns out to be Keir Starmer playing non-binary. |

Technically, Ncuti won't be the first non white actor to have played the Doctor, that honour goes to Jo Martin.

We all know the Daily Mail can be awful, but the people who spend their lives in the comments section are a whole different species, and I don't think it's fair to judge any paper, not even the Mail, by the people who spend their lives there.
Granted, papers (all of them and online news sites from across the political spectrum) can be guilty of writing articles that will get the comments sections buzzing, but that's because that's what gets an article hits, and hits means advertising revenue, which is what pays for their writers.

I don't subscribe to Netflix so I've never watched Sex Education but he seems to have had some good reviews and has won numerous awards for the role. His name wasn't amongst the favourites but he is an interesting choice and a black Dr has long been rumoured. I must admit the last couple of series of Dr Who had got tedious and I yearned for quality of Russell T's era so I vowed I'd start watching again when when I heard he was returning to oversee the show.
The announcement was a bit flat I first heard it tagged onto a red carpet report on yesterday's lunchtime news but I've got high hopes for new Dr as he is a Russell T choice.

Yes, as much as I love Doctor Who and I rate most of the actors involved, the show has progressed from must see tv to something I set to series record and watch when I remember.
I think it is fair to say that some of the quality of writing is less than it was, but a lot of it is the diminishing returns for a series that invariably repeats certain characters and concepts. Viewing figures are down, and it's no longer event tv, so I can see why they wanted to avoid a big press conference or stand alone announcement.
Perhaps it's just evidence of living in a bubble, but I've not yet seen any real life people complaining about Ncuti's race, except a much shared screen shot of a pointed comment about the BBC's predictability, rather than them saying the Doctor can't be played by a black (or gay) actor. My entire timeline and group chats seem to be dominated by people predicting that other people will be raging about it, or expecting terrible comments. I've no doubt that racists exist and some of them will be upset, and maybe it's good to address it head on, but I can't help but think that it's also a sign that lots more people want to talk about how racists will be angry than talk about Doctor Who the tv series.

I'm interested in the casting, but its going to take a lot for me and dr who fans to return to the series.
Starting with Davies retconning the Timeless Child retcon. That was a terrible decision that went against the character of the doctor.
And if you liked that story, good for you, but combined with the bad writing under Chris Chibnall the plummeting viewing ratings has showed that Dr Who is losing its audience.
And if anyone makes the 'fans hated the dr becoming a woman' argument, I am sure there are people who feel that way but many were open to the casting. Me included. But Jodie Whitaker was not that convincing. Even Jo Martin proved to be a better Doctor than her.
If ever, the fact that the BBC has handed over production of Doctor Who to the beloved Russel T Davies and his company 'Bad Wolf', is telling that they need this show to get back on track. Heck there were rumours that David Tennant was going to return as the 14th Doctor.
Also, 'Bad Wolf' has been acquired by Sony Pictures, and if 'Spiderman No Way Home' and the 'Ghostbusters: After life' is anything to go by they are in the business of delivering stories for the fans.
