Well he's now blocked me on Twitter, which is a shame given I've met him and his husband socially, and got on with them. He posted something factually inaccurate about me - that I posted on this board after saying that I would end the discussion, whereas my postings on this site were prior to that tweet. But then he blocked me so I couldn't respond. I am sorry, because I don't like falling out with people.
I guess what I find odd is that if this is a toxic brand filled with clowns why he thinks it's worthy taking quotes from it and distributing them further. Over and out.
Apologies for derailing this thread, happy if the mods decide to move these posts elsewhere.

Does anyone know if this is running properly yet? I have tickets for Saturday and would rather a refund than turn up to see a concert version.

I didn't particularly enjoy this. They crammed about 30 years worth of history into this show, which means there are a lot of things to cover, but somehow they don't seem to cover anything at all. This is very much almost a sung through musical with barely any dialogue, however, the songs don't really advance the plot or say anything, so you don't really get any story telling (which is probably why it feels like time is passing but nothing is happening). It was also a bit rogue for the writing team to start the story just before Mandela gets imprisoned and finish it as he gets out, meaning all we really see Mandela do all musical is sit in jail. I don't know if they were going down the route of naming the show 'Mandela', but actually wanting to tell the story more of Winnie Mandela (a la Hamilton) and his various children instead?
The songs themselves felt very samey and I would have categorised the songs as the 'fighting fire with fire' song, the close harmony acapella type songs and the Warden's song and everything else was some kind of reprise of that.
I had the understudy for Mandela on and he was fine, but I didn't really feel like I was getting very much from him. In general, the South African accents could do with some work.
I'm glad I did get to see the full version rather than a concert version of the show because my favourite part of the show was the choreography. I thought that was fantastic.

Certainly got choreography in the concert version Saturday eve That's good. What did they cut then to make it not fully staged?

I'm sure all illnesses in the cast are real; but there can be a connection between illness and a project not going well. After the mainly awful reviews morale must have been low, and the inner resources of 'Dr Theatre' plummeting. I know that I only get ill the moment after a heavy work project, where psychosomatically my body tells me I'm allowed to be ill now and every latent illness crashes in (just when I hoped for fun time off).
I wonder how much of a mentor, critical friend, and host Kwame Kwei Armah was able to be to the production and cast. He's been busy directing the Basquiat/Warhol play 'Collaboration' on Broadway - opened end of November and runs til early Feb. Quite a big deal for him. No blame, but there are times when a project and cast can benefit from being held by the overall Artistic Director.
This show has felt almost like a 'venue hire' incoming project - is it?

The initial "illness" (which was not something that could have been in any way avoided) wasn't helped by Kwame's refusal to help with understudies and swings etc. He didn't even want to do a concert version.

He was on tonight and he was terrific - so was the rest of the cast. Book is bad but this is worth seeing for the amazingly talented cast.

Yep, he was great, and also in particular was Danielle Fiamanya who was a real standout with fantastic vocals. The book is clunky for sure, although the score is pretty good (especially the African and choral parts) and I thought the story transferred well to a musical.

I don't know if it's because I was expecting a car crash or if there have been changes to the production since the early reviews, but I thought this was fantastic last night. Very moving. Excellent performances across the board, and especially from Danielle Fiamanya who is a star (I thought she was brilliant as Elsa and she's even better in this).
And, as confirmed by others, Michael Luwoye was definitely present so I'm not sure where that rumour came from?!

Shocking - a really talented man (great in Sunset Boulevard) and seems a lovely guy when interviewed. Good to read (on the GoFundMe page) that the Young Vic has been so supportive of him and his family. Sounds like he's made good early progress, but it will be slow physically, and include adjusting to the vulnerability that it happened.

Sounds like the Young Vic have dealt with this brilliantly.
"I'm so pleased to say that the Young Vic has been an incredible support for Adam and his family. Offering accommodation for his family at nearby hotels to the hospitals where he was an inpatient, letting him know that the show was always open for him to return when and if he felt ready. But the biggest relief for Adam and his family was that the producers supported them financially, and paid him as if he has completed the run."
Not so much for whoever this is...
"Adam was meant to start a new year-long contract this year, but, on being informed of his current medical situation, the producers decided to withdraw his contract with no offer of support."

I would assume the Bridge Theatre as he was due to play Harry the Horse in Guys and Dolls

I don't see that his future employer has done anything wrong. He hadn't started his employment, and awful and sad as it is, Adam is not going to be able to start the job on time. In fact its quite likely he may not be able to perform it at all during the run, he has a long road ahead of him
No employer would pay or keep a job open for a future employee who hasn't started their contract and isn't going to be able to start.
