Inspired by the recent thread on who would be the next BAME performers to get knighthoods/damehoods, so I thought, how about LGBTQ+ celebs? We’ve had McKellen, SRB, Derek Jacobi, the late Nigel Hawthorne, who are all knighted. I wonder who will be next in line, if not for the KBE/DBE, at least the other ranks like the CBE, OBE, and MBE.
I’d love to see Ben Daniels get Honours from the Queen. Maybe an OBE or CBE then it could be upgraded to knighthood. If he wins the Olivier tomorrow, this will surely raise his profile even more. Sure, he played the Queen’s brother-in-law in The Crown, the real royals will just make jokes about this hahaha.
Sir Russell T Davies sounds so cool. He has an OBE already, but being called Sir RTD is better. It’s a no-brainer that he’s one of the great forces of British television.
Mark Gatiss, same with RTD, a legend in the telly. Surprised that he hasn’t got royal honours.
Sharon D. Clarke. A West End legend and the only actress so far to be nominated across all 4 acting categories at the Oliviers, and that’s something.
Who else would make it to the list?

It should be Dame Fiona Shaw (currently CBE) but who knows if she's already turned it down. It should also be Lord McKellen.

I was wondering about titles for non binary artists/creatives and any other person receiving an honour. CBEs etc are gender neutral but obviously once you hit the Sir/Dame level they aren't. I'd agree with some Dames who have said the current female honour of Dame isn't as good as a knight, perhaps they should let people choose which they'd prefer and there needs to be another option?

What a thoughtful post. Genuinely not thought about this aspect before (mostly because I thjnk the whole system is wrong, but I know not everyone shares that view.)

I wouldn't think of them as different, except there are more Sirs in the country than Dames. But apparently Dame is better than Sir as not all Sirs get a corresponding KBE, but there's no way to become a Dame without getting a DBE.
So we've got Sir Andy Murray who is still OBE as he skipped the CBE, then Sir Mo Farah CBE, but it's Dame Kelly Homes DBE.

Knights (Sirs) are usually Knights Batchelor and could in theory put Kt after their name if if they became a Lord to signal they had also been knighted but the late Dickie Attenborough used the formal styling Lord Attenborough CBE indicating he had been made a CBE as well as a Lord but didn't bother with his knighthood.
Full Knighthoods given to none British Residents on the Diplomatic/Overseas hounours are sometimes KBEs like Roger Moore.
It is a bit confusing to put DBE after a Dame's name as you might check if they have had an earlier OBE/CBE lets say Julia Walters so someone might address a letter to her Dame Julie Walters CBE being respectful when it should be Dame Julie Walters DBE.
I think of the difference along the lines of men are knighted with a sword but a Damehood isn't so Dames getting to put letters after their name balances that out somewhat.
We will see a Sir or Dame transition in due course and a none binary person get a knight/damehood - Eddie Izzard who has done a lot of charity work and 30 plus year successful career just sprang to mind. I've no idea if Eddie has turned down an honour before.

Simon Callow, Alan Cummings have received a CBE and OBE respectively so could be in line for a knighthood especially Simon in the next few years. Stephen Fry I believe has turned down an honour before. Matt Lucas has had a long successful career and done his bit for Comic Relief so I could see him getting an MBE/OBE in next few years. Ben Wilshaw is another name that sprang to mind.
Greg Doran's knighthood is likely due this year or next too I'd assume.

Stephen Fry is one I am surprised hasn't been knighted but if he's turned it down then it makes sense. Although not LGBTQ+, I think Hugh Laurie will end up being a Sir within a couple of years.

Hugh has been made an OBE and a CBE so I'd agree that a knighthood offer is likely to come his way in the next 5 or so years and certainly next decade. Probably at about the same time Rowan Atkinson and Richard Curtis get theirs.
I can find no official record that Stephen has turned an honour down and he did have a spell in detention when he was much younger but that hasn't stopped others getting honours.
If you wanted a real name from the past who is still with us could the great Stanley Baxter be persuaded to accept a gong at the age of nearly 96 especially as his most famous impersonation is in her platimum jubilee year.
