 Ian McKellen and Peter Schaufuss will collabarate and perform together at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in the world premiere of Hamlet with the Edinburgh Festival Ballet Co in new performance concept adapted from Shakespeare’s play. McKellan will share the lead role with dancer Johan Christiansen, and will be on stage throughout the 75-minute production. Also performing are Luke Schaufuss, Stefan Wise and artists from the Edinburgh Festival Ballet. Director & choreographer Peter Schaufuss, with original music composed by Ethan Lewis Maltby and production design by Ben M Rogers This production will launch the 400-seat Ashton Hall at Saint Stephens Edinburgh, a new venue. Hamlet will play 2nd – 28th August 2022 on sale now. |

He already had the play last year, which was also apparently made into a film. He’s a brilliantly gifted performer, but my main reaction to this is just “why?” Is this a vanity project that’s going to keep going until he’s exhausted every medium?
I am curious how you take a very dense 3 hour plus play and turn it into 75 minute dance show and still have it make sense though.

Having McKellen standing there narrating (I assume) is more than you get for other ballets including those that have been based on Shakespeare. Agree on McKellen though - I suppose he's rich enough to do whatever he wants and to ignore anyone (his agent for example) who might suggest some projects are more worthwhile than others. I've always felt his best work has been when he's been working for a heavyweight director, he's been less good when he's had more influence on the direction himself and due to his status that trend has increased over time. Having said that at his best he's easily been the best actor I've seen on stage. |

I love the fact that he is going to be onstage throughout. . Of course he is. At his age you like to sit down and stay there, not bob about. I hope they serve him a cuppa or something stronger while he has a good time, acting ..
