Oh
Let's wave some black cloaks about
It's so cutting edge
The "movement" is laughably pathetic
And painfully embarrassing as per the usual Hoggett way

ND is off tonight
But all others on
The acting drives the story well enough
There are some awful lines
It does not look as if much has been spent on it
Neither does it look understated yet impressive
The visuals are the most disappointing thing about it
Ironically
But I do love the actors who rise above the pantomime script and cliche of the whole venture
As a piece of theatre it's dreadfully old fashioned and relatively pathetic

f****** plebs eating popcorn behind me
As a small tangent
I have NEVER seen people eating during the performance at the ROH
Why do people think it's okay to eat DURING the show in pleb theatre?
Plus they sell popcorn here

Please stop calling people plebs, it's small, mean, and nasty. And I promise there are rude and disruptive people at the ROH too, no matter how big a snob you are.

Parsley.... Stop. Are you drunk?
I think we can all agree that Harry Potter is a triumphant success. The magic is worth going to see alone. Yes it will be a tourist trap but it will also bring millions to the economy and will probably run forever. Yes some of the staging is old school and that's why it is so effective, yes the set is at times rather simple but think of the fact that it's a five hour show in two parts and I think the design and play in general is astonishing.
The plebs you talk about are people that make the West End a success. Without the plebs we wouldn't even have a theatre board, so shut up, get a grip, be grateful the show is even on and get over yourself!

It's funny... when I think of the theatre I've seen so far this year, it's Potter that sticks out in my mind as having been a great experience. And I wasn't even that taken with the first half!
I've cut back a bit on my theatregoing this year so maybe I just haven't seen the best, but I think it's been a pretty dodgy year plays-wise and Potter at least got me excited about the possibilities of theatre again.

I don't think I can say it more eloquently than kevinuk but I would reinforce that these plays were huge for me, I'll never forget what it was like turning up seeing huge Harry Potter fans all around, the twists and turns of the shows, the gasps of shock or delight from the audience, and the joy at seeing brilliant actors bring the story to light.
I fully accept that I would not be saying this had I not grown up with Harry Potter.
But I did.
And I loved it.

Absolutely agree with you lot, Parsley's criticisms are churlish given the fan love this inspires (and also, Parsley, didn't you say "WOW WOW WOW" about the first preview?). Is this the best play of the year? Actually I think it is up there, but objectively WHO CARES! With an obsession, or a passion, or a fandom, or a childhood memory, you really, really, really don’t want to be logical or clinical or analytical, but frankly you don’t have to be. The last Harry Potter book came out in 2007, the year of District and Circle. The last Harry Potter film came out in 2011, the year of A Separation. The Harry Potter play has come out in 2016, a year that unlike Kevin I’ve found absolutely bloody stunning play-wise (new plays The Encounter, The Flick, revivals Faith Healer, Les Blancs, I really think 2016’s had one of the most exciting set of highlights in years). Objectively, the Harry Potter pieces are not the best examples of their medium, no. But which film did I watch three times in one week at the cinema? Love Asghar Fahradi as I do, well...
The fact that the Harry Potter pieces, objectively, aren’t the best pieces of the year takes nothing away from our passion towards them. Potter’s a lovely franchise, particularly, in that I do think Rowling’s a very good writer (and Thorne indisputably is) and truly cares about the characters, so what we get tends to be good as opposed to filler. As a piece of theatre, Cursed Child is clearly something a cut above, but that’s almost by the bye – we bring to it so much goodwill, so much expectation, so much hope and passion and enthusiasm, and what matters first and foremost is that that is paid off (which is why I think it’s wonderful that Tiffany didn’t overload this with special effects, but made particularly the final quarter so focused on character). Things that happen, particularly in Act III (trying to not do spoilers, but let’s say moments of character), are the pay-off of twenty years of loyalty to these characters. That’s why this is special – not because Act III is the best-written third act in history, but it’s the one which offers the most reward back for its audience.
Would you enjoy this were you not a Potter fan? I think yes, three/four stars, you’d be wowed by the effects, entertained by the adventure, moved by the ending and content enough. But when you bring your own encyclopaedic knowledge and personal passion with you, it becomes something so much else. I assume Parsley didn’t bring that, but what Bend It To Beckham was to him Harry Potter is to a generation.
Sounds like you're one of those Harry Potter fans who's never forgiven JK Rowling for marrying Harry to Ginny & Ron to Hermione rather than Harry & Hermione to each other. ;-)
I’m more miffed she rewrote the perfect ending in the first place...

I wonder when this will cross the pond, and if any of our leads go with them? Us Brits adore Harry Potter, but the Americans always seemed to make more noise about their love of it during the height of Pottermania. I can see this being a huge deal when it gets there. I'm also starting to wonder what the fandom will be like when the leads actually move onto other jobs. Do we think it'll become like 'Wicked'? Maybe not, as tickets aren't exactly easy to come by I suppose... I could see Jamie, Sam and possibly Anthony transfer, Noma and Paul I'm not sure as they have family. I think Autumn 2017/Spring 2018 is the likely timeline, I'm not sure what theatre they're aiming for but the Al Hirchfeld which is home to Kinky Boots on Broadway would be good.

I have to disagree with you there. I can't imagine HP in the Hirschfeld at all. The seating capacity is fairly similar to the Palace, but I doubt the Hirschfeld has the physical space they require to do HP, unless they drastically scale it down, which would be a shame. I could see it going into the Lyric theatre on Broadway, however.

Is Hello Dolly a limited engagement? If so, I'd thought the Shubert would be a very suitable choice if it becomes available in 2018.

The Palace isn't actually that big stage wise and the Hirschfeld had hosted a lot of medium sized shows like Kinky Boots, How to Succeed etc The Lyric would be far too big and you'd lose any sense of intimacy. Is Hello Dolly a limited engagement? If so, I'd thought the Shubert would be a very suitable choice if it becomes available in 2018. The Shubert would be great but I suspect once Bette leaves, they'll line up an suitable replacement.

Well just 2 weeks short from veing a full year since I booked my tickets, I finally saw both parts today.
Absolutley loved it. Now just have to wait another 11 months to see it again.
Almost full cast apart from an understudy for Scorpious, who was great.

According to Page Six which is the NY Post's gossip column, Cursed Child will be heading to the Al Hirschfeld which IMO is the perfect size for it since it's 1400 seats but feels very intimate much like the Palace.

So, last minute premium tickets now for sale on the website at £199 each...... I think it is a shame they don't sell more via Friday Forty instead, so we don't have to be rich to get them! I hope JK knows about this....it's hardly as if the show isn't already making money! I know the argument will be that people will go and pay more on the "resale market" so why shouldn't the show make the money but COME ON! £199.....

They've been £190 for a few weeks now - the £9 is new. But it's £199 for both parts, so it's the cost of a premium seat for 2 west end performances. Not so unusual really - BOM are charging up to £202 for last minute premium seats. I know the rest of the West End works likes this but this is something associated with JK! This is Harry Potter! It's not supposed to be about fleecing people.....I sort of expected better! They are sold out forever...surely this is just the opportunity to give away more decent priced seats instead of going with "market forces" ? Come on JK have a word and do the decent thing! I am pretty sure that £199 a ticket will not deter people hoping for a profit, so don't try using that argument...this is just selling last minute tickets to rich people ....put more tickets up for Friday Forty and then shout about it! You can do it!!!!!

The more upsetting thing is that row L in the balcony is now £40 PER PART, so £80 in all, which is just outrageous.

You can do it!!!!! We have to accept that ultimately, this is a joint venture and other parties are looking to make a profit from this. I'm sure JKR was instrumental in ensuring a decent number of seats would be affordable, but this is a commercial venture so it is what it is. Plus I don't think the show is badly priced at all actually. I've sat in the balcony and the stalls for this and have to say, the balcony view for this is surprisingly good. Sonia Friedman does champion cheap seats being available for all her shows. Also, having sat in both the Balcony and the Stalls, I can also attest that the view in the balcony is not half bad!

The top price for 5 hours worth of entertainment is the same as 2 and a half hours worth at other shows. Considering that this show is the most in demand ticket in London too, I think that's more than reasonable.

Nope, I still think JK should have a word and that this show SHOULD be different...and set a standard...it's hardly as though they won't make a profit selling at £140 for stalls tickets. Have a heart and stand up for decency and reject greediness....I refuse to be swayed on this one and will stay idealistic and naive, expecting the best of society and Hogwarts, but will now shut up! Lol! (Am expecting a howler at any moment from JK!)
