So could you go and see this with very limited knowledge of the books/films? I don't think so. It's very much a homage to the original stories/characters. The programme has a timeline of the books so you might not be completely confused but I think a lot of the detail would go over your head.

Will have to watch the films, tried the first book but (no offence to anyone) it was just plain awful.

Just got in from Part 1. I agree with a lot of what people have sai already. It's all done very well. Both cast and technical stuff are excellent. It's also running pretty smoothly. I'd change one or two little things but people in the spoiler thread seem to really like one element that I thought didn't go down so well with tonight's audience so will be interesting to see what others think. On that note I feel like the spoiler thread needs to be in two parts! I've read some stuff there but had to stop to avoid seeing part 2 spoilers, so can't post thoughts. Seatswise, we have E10 and E11 which are great. Nelly - I didn't try out your seat but from where I was sitting it looked like the back of the stalls would be ok. I don't think the overhang will affect too much. I think some people have already said this but I would not want to read the script before watching the show. It's very much designed to be seen. The ending of Part 1 in particular was epic and I can't see it coming across the same in writing. I must have been right behind you as I was in F9!

I don't think I've been this excited to see something new before. 15 days left to try and be spoiler free! I'll have a lot of catching up on the spoiler thread!

Do they use the main theme music from the film in the play?

Do they use the main theme music from the film in the play? Nope. This seems to be a totally separate endeavour. They don't appear to have the rights to any of the film intellectual property, judging by the merchandise (as well as certain things that happen on stage).

Cheers. Will have to watch the films, tried the first book but (no offence to anyone) it was just plain awful. It took me a few tries to get through the first book. I give up if I can't get into a book. There are other books. I found the Harry Potter books very readable, but only once. Nothing has induced me to open them again. There are some children's books I've read several times but these aren't among them.

I just assumed they weren't written for a 35 yr old man with a massive chip on his shoulder so gave up. Il watch the movies/ask some kid what happens when I get to the theatre

However, they were all coming out when I was at school and everyone was talking about them so I wanted to be able to join in. Also I loved magic and fantasy so I thought they'd suit me. I'm glad I persevered as I grew to really enjoy the later books (even though they were far too long). I did re-read books 1-6 before the last one came out to refresh my memory.

Unfortunately as the books pick up, the editors clearly put down their pens. The last few could really have done with some significant trimming. I was sceptical about the play being in two parts for this reason but there's not much I would drop from Part 1. It did drag a little bit in the 2nd Act but it recovers spectacularly at the end. Fingers crossed Part 2 continues along those lines.....

The last one needed to be as long as it was, but books 4 to 6 were far too long. I still loved them all though, I was exactly the target age and got all of them from book 4 onwards the day they were released. I remember reading Deathly Hallows in about 4 hours the first time through. Then I read it again a couple of days later to take in and appreciate the detail.

Fans do complain that the films cut a lot from the books not realising that it's a different medium and sometimes that means not being totally faithful to the material.

It's all music composed by Imogen Heap, some original and some modified from her current library, vocals but no words. It works beautifully. It starts out with an instrumental variation of her song "First Train Home," It all works perfect with Steven Hoggett's choreography. And yes see you Tuesday!

Warner Bros owns all the copyright and trademark to Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts. JK Rowling only has publishing and theatrical rights to Harry Potter IIRC I wonder who is responsible for merchandise since WB has a tight grip on Harry Potter consumer products. I assume they wanted to the play to be separate from the films so they didn't use any of the imagery when they could done so as WB likely wouldn't have said no.

I loved the books as I read aloud the first two to my children and they have such magical descriptions of her "world" that it was lovely. Read them before all the hype, as proved by the fact that my second Harry Potter book is a first edition! I also wrongly pronounced Hermione the whole time, as had never heard of the name at the time....Herm...ee...onie she will always be to me and my girls! Then we used to wait until midnight to buy each new book and had to eventually buy 3 copies so me and them could read at the same time (and agree not to talk about them until husband then read one!) I agree she needed a more ruthless editor by the end of the series and she clearly made up some of the plot as she went along but they will always hold a special place in my heart!

The way they were going I thought that if Rowling kept adding stories to the series they'd eventually be so long I'd have to have the ends of the book hanging out the front and back doors and slide it through the house as I read it.

Now let's be fair, the books were reducing in size after book 5 was published. JKR admits 5 was huge but she can't see what should be cut and frankly, I'm inclined to agree as that's my favourite one! More recently she's said that in retrospective she can see that there are about 200 pages more than was really needed. I'm not complaining, though. I love Order of the Phoenix.

The Order of the Phoenix is my favourite story but severely bloated in book form.
(Maggie Smith was underused in all the films.)
There was talk of J.K. (not of Jamiroquai fame) revisiting the books to add material wasn't there? (I assume she meant 1-3.)

I pronounced it Her-my-oh-nee from the get go and was castigated by school chums who believed it was Hermy-own. Shame we all went our separate ways before the films came out really...

I didn't mind the length of Goblet, HBP or Hallows. I really don't see much in Hallows or HBP that could be cut. OOTP though was too long and there seemed to be a lot of filler and repeating the same things again and again. It felt more of a chore to read that one compared to all the others.

Clearly the film makers thought the same as OOTP is the second shortest film after DH2 and it cuts a lot from the book.
