This will be a huge acid test. I have yet to see a horror story work on stage and "The Shining" is one of the best ever horror films. So something's got to give.

I think the film is too iconic for them to be completely distancing themselves from it, aesthetically at the very least. If that hallway carpet doesn't make an appearance I'll be very surprised. Even the new Doctor Sleep film is using the look of the hotel even though that apparently isn't a sequel to the film but an adaptation of the book. Also Van Hove loves to adapt films as of late. |

Ivo Van Hove involved, you can guarantee tons of back projections (the explosions of blood, the twins, Danny cycling down the corridor and that’s just for starters)

King famously HATED the film so if he owns the rights to the book he’s unlikely to give the rights to a production that copies the film rather than his book. Of course I may be completely wrong. Maybe whomever owns the rights to the film owns the book rights too. I know that King gets back the rights to several of his books in the next couple of years if films companies don’t produce a film so Shining could be one? |

Am I odd in enjoying the book of " Doctor Sleep" far more than the original "The Shining"? The film is absolutely fantastic as well, especially the longer Directors Cut. |

The Shining is VERY early King (like 2nd or 3rd book i think?) and you can really tell his writing was still a little rough around the edges back then. As for this, thanks but no thanks. After All About Eve, I swore off Ivo Van Hove forever more. A director who, to me, consistently doesn't understand the source material he's adapting and directing. |

As much as I wanted to like it, I wasn't a huge fan of the film. But I think it could actually work well on stage!

The thing is, when he just concentrates on the actors and nothing else he can produce wonders like A View from the Bridge, which was extraordinary. I will be seeing the Greek tragedies at the Barbican this May. But I'm just not interested in these film adaptations. I don't see the point. |

Tbh once you got used to gimmick of Network, it was actually rather enjoyable...but I wanted to slap him halfway through All About Eve 🙃

I hadn’t seen anything of his before All About Eve and I really enjoyed it. I can see how it could get tiresome if he’s using the same technique for every new production though. Having said that, a Stephen King adaptation is going to appeal to a whole new group of people many of who wouldn’t have been interested in his previous stuff so … keep rollin’ them out Ivo!

I was a big fan of Ben Stiller in his Zoolander/Meet The Patents/Dodgeball/Tropic Thunder days : I don’t know if it’s the problems he’s had in the last ten years (a prostate cancer diagnosis and problems with his marriage (which might have been resolved recently by the sound of it) but in recent times he seems to have done a Woody Allen and is determined to be seen as a serious artist so he’s linked with stuff like this (I tried watching the first episode of Severance on AppleTV recently and haven’t been tempted to go back yet)
He’s not the box office draw he was ten years ago but he will be a major lure for tourists and I’m sure tickets for this will cost an absolute fortune: interesting to see who will be playing the other parts (I’m not sure about the book but the film only has five or six characters in it)
