Not long until Titanic. We should all book for the same night and a drink in the bar.
Ship Ahoy!

So yeah, I saw this last night and absolutely loved it! It's a great ensemble piece, with great music and some compelling characters. I thought it really worked on the Charing Cross Theatre's tiny stage, and the set was used really ingeniously. Very slick for a first preview, with an outstanding cast! Niall Sheehy has an incredible voice, and really stood out in both of his roles, particularly as the stoker Barrett. Though really everyone was excellent. Some amazingly swift costume (and wig?) changes, which made my head spin a little. I imagine it's probably pretty manic backstage at some points!
All in all, I loved it! Shame about some of the audience members though (more on that in the bad behaviour thread).

I was in row F and luckily was not aware of audience problems.
I also loved it and will be going back.
Standing ovation. Don't see many of these at the Charing Cross theatre!

Did you know that the London run has been postponed because Audra is pregnant?

saw it tonight and absolutely adored it! what a glorious production!
my first time at charing cross theatre and at first look the stage looked terribly small but once the show starts its fine and is busted very very well! Its a very large seating area for such a small stage, but a really nice little theatre.
I missed the show when it was at the southwark and am so glad to have the chance to see it again, i love Sutherland's work, id love to see his Grand Hotel again!

I've not seen this production but have seen several others, and have to say it is a truly magnificent musical. I think the rag stands out as getting the tone wrong, but then they are supposed to be dancing on deck..it does seem very musical comedy. All the other pieces have great dignity and are extremely moving.

Is the set rather grand or just a ship deck? How do they do the sinking?

So, I went last night and it was really a special show and production. I loved it with all my heart and I don't think I've ever been more moved in a theatre.
The cast is really good, the male members are better singers imo, especially the older gentlemen. I really, really liked Matt Crowe as Bride, it was such a sweet performance.
The stage is considerably smaller than the one they performerd on in Toronto, so I think some of the (otherwise lovely) coreopgraphy should be re-imagined for this tiny space.
I can't wait to go again!

I really liked how compact the stage was (the band are behind it so they lost a lot of depth that way too). It gave a sense of claustrophobia and being trapped to some scenes, which are obviously very common themes in the show. And they did their best to expand the staging area as much as possible, by adding a forestage in front of the pros, bringing cast into the audience and even painting the two side balcony bits with the same white band as the set.

As I understand it, the ragtime music number has a direct connection to the music played on board the ship, Ragtime was the most popular form of music of the period, and was played with other 'light music' as the ship was sinking.

Just wondering about booking for this. Has anyone any experience of sitting on the benches to the sides? I know they are marked as restricted view, but how bad are they?!

How is front row? Stage height etc. Just left the matinee. I was in row B which was front row. I moved as the stage was too high plus added to that 2 Russian women behind me that picked their moments to whisper to each other (may as well have been shouting) i felt it better to have moved. I saw more of the set from Row J. I'm going to make a return visit and sit just after the break in the rows. Hope this helps

We have a 12 year old with us so she'd probably be better sitting further back.

Has anyone any experience of sitting on the benches to the sides? I know they are marked as restricted view, but how bad are they?! Was discussed on the general "Charing Cross Season" thread. A bench in an alcove behind a wall, either side of the stage. Narrow, unpadded, 5 people squeeze onto it. The first person, the one by the entrance to it, gets unlimited legroom. Everybody else had better be under 5ft tall - though if they are, they won't see over the wall in front. The view is very sideways on and you will miss a lot of nearside stage action. Not in to see this for a few days yet, but "Tokyo Hotel" one bench saw nothing at all due to set design. Read more: theatreboard.co.uk/thread/395/titanic-radio-ragtime-charing-season#ixzz4AK6DAD29Thanks very much - I think I'll pay a bit more for a reasonable seat!

I LOVED this in Southwark.. But the idea of seeing it in this horrible theatre makes me sad. At least it's getting a longer life though I suppose

I saw this last night. It was an eventful evening.
First of all some of the music is sensational. Real goosebump type moments. Lady's Maid, We'll Meet Tomorrow etc. It was the first time I had ever seen the show on stage after adoring the Broadway cast album in the late 90's.
That said, parts of the show were stunning and other parts really fell flat. A third of the cast needs to be recast. Some of the actors and singers were excellent and others were simply terrible. One in particular was just too camp I'm sorry and one of the other crew members (will leave it there) was like Benny Hill with flat singing and physicality. I also had issues with some of the tone of the piece, the pacing and the doubling up of characters - did they do that on Broadway? Why didn't they explore the third class passengers more?
There were a few sound issues with dodgy mics and although I loved the lifeboat scenes dare I say it, at times I found it bordering on tasteless - the rag worked for me but the opening of act 2 not. It's a fine line between classy and tacky. Authentic and hamming it up.
Finally at the end of the show there was a fishy and smoke smell in the theatre. We laughed on the way out saying surely they didn't add this to effect. On exiting we saw a theatre type manager in a tux screaming at the Vietnamese restaurant next door saying he will "get the council to shut them down!"
Thomas Southerland the director and Danielle Tarento the producer looked quite shocked. There was more drama when leaving than onstage! Drinks thrown from the guy and everything!
The book isn't perfect and neither were some performances but we still liked it. Just a shame it's in that theatre also, smells aside, it's not the best. 9/10 moments mixed with 2/10. A confused bag and I get the feeling from the faces of the team that they know it and have failed to recreate the magic of the Southwark Playhouse production with this new cast.
