Apologies if there is a CFT thread, I looked but couldn’t find one, so please delete if so. What are your thoughts on the new season’s offerings? I have managed to book a number of trips, including Crazy for You, Unfriended, Murder on the Orient Express, The Taxidermist Daughter and The Southbury Child. Really looking forward to seeing Alex Jennings back on stage

It there wasn’t one, which is in a way very sad.
Normally their artistic announcement is met with great anticipation, with speculation ahead of the very announcement. So after a difficult 2 years there first full announcement should have been met with great excitement.
So I read in to it that no thread must mean board members including myself are very disappointed with what is being proposed.
Which is a shame.

I’ve only been to Chichester once, for South Pacific last year. Had booked that and The Unfriend when they were originally scheduled, so will try to see The Unfriend if I can, but Crazy for You has thrown a bit of a spanner in the works there as they don’t overlap and it’s a bit far/awkward to try to plan two separate trips down there.
The other show I’m intrigued by is The Famous Five, not because I have any particular interest in the material, but because it’s a coproduction with one of my local theatres, Theatr Clwyd, so will probably end up seeing that up here.

So after a difficult 2 years there first full announcement should have been met with great excitement. So I read in to it that no thread must mean board members including myself are very disappointed with what is being proposed. Which is a shame. Mark me down in the disappointed camp. My initial reaction to the programme was: "Agatha Christie, Alan Ayckbourn and Enid Blyton. This is what you would expect to see from the local Am-Dram Society." Probably it will get the coach parties in but I am not excited.
I have had my ticket for "The Unfriend", booked pre-Covid, rolled forward. However, I am upset that "Assassins" is not rescheduled. Given Sondheim's death and the fact that Daniel Evans is supposed to be a big fan of his works then I expected to see one of his musicals.
I'll probably go to see "The Southbury Child" as I am a fan of Alex Jennings and it will be good to see Charlie Stemp again so I'll go to "Crazy for You". But as for "Murder on the Orient Express" - surely everyone knows the denoument by now? The highlight for me of the 70's film version was the music by Richard Rodney Bennett.
I know that some on this board rave about "Our Generation" but I am yet to be persuaded to devote nearly 4 hours of my life to watch this. Similarly, "Sing Yer Heart Out For The Lads" has its admirers but I can't stand football so I'll give it a miss.
Considering this is the Festival's 60th year, I am underwhelmed by it. The only production that excites me is "The Wind in the Willows" by the Youth Theatre in December.

I'm a bit disappointed by this year's programme, although I've seen Our Generation at the NT and have booked Southbury Child at the Bridge. It's a shame Doubt had such a short run - I think I'd have preferred it to any of the upcoming plays. I will probably go to either Woman in Mind or The Unfriend, just for the enjoyment of a day trip to Chichester.
I like Roy Williams but I think he is a bit overexposed at the moment.
I wonder if The Flock, which was pulled during rehearsals last year, will ever return.

Is this fairly easy to reach by train from London? Yes , Its about 90 mins direct from London Victoria. Only if the trains are running! Need to be careful to check for engineering works. And getting back to London after an evening show can be a pain, I only ever go to matinées at Chichester.

I wasn't even aware they'd announced their season, they must have struck me off their email list even though I've been going there for years. No Shakespeare this year - normally there is I think. They've got strong casts in some of those but nothing worth me making the trip for. Agree on Murder on the Orient Express - quite an odd idea to do a stage adaptation of something that is so well known, surely everyone (at least amongst their core audience) knows whodunit and so what's left ?.

I only realised today that Famous Five ( a completely new musical co-production) is at the Festival Theatre while Local Hero continues at the Minerva. The overlapping dates are 21 October to 12 November. I'd already booked a Saturday 14.45 matinee of Local Hero and have added an evening performance of Famous Five the same day. It starts at 19.00 and hopefully will allow a return to London on the final direct train at 21.39 though there are later departures requiring a change and reaching Victoria after midnight.

Apparently they’re hoping to tour The Famous Five, with a possible West End transfer too, as long as it’s well received.

2023 season being announced on Thursday 16th February.
Anybody got any intel beyond...
- The musicals being The Sound of Music and Assassins - 4000 Miles with Eileen Atkins but not Timothee Chalamet - (personal hunch) there was a newspaper interview a while back with Lia Williams who said she was going to be doing The Vortex with her son, Joshua James, which I think is a perfect fit for CFT...?

That's interesting, as they haven't emailed members yet to announce the announcement - as it were. When I was there last week I asked if they knew when it would be and was told only second half of February, so that much was correct. It seems so much later than other new season announcements that I'll actually be half-relieved if there's little I want to see as I don't know how I'd fit in several more full day trips.

It really isn't a long walk from the theatre to the station! I know it depends on your pace but I can do it in 12 minutes if the streets are quiet (eg after a long matinee or an evening performance when I used to attend these), though 15 minutes is more comfortable if you're not dashing for an infrequent train.
Pallant House gallery (in Pallant Street, parallel to the main north-south axis of the town centre) has really interesting exhbitions and a good permanent collection; there are some beautiful gardens in which to sit out in warmer weather; some independent shops as well as the usual chains; the cathedral; remnants of the old city walls and so on. If you don't go too often so it becomes over-familiar, as any town would, Chichester is an attractive place for a day out, based on theatre or not, or a weekend break.

Good news about the new cloisters cafe. Quality of the food used to be spot on. With the court yard garden and peregrine spotting it was a great place for a quiet break in the middle of town

My bag was so heavy leaving Chichester after working on a production there because I couldn't resist that shop.

They tend to have far better quality clothes donated than our local shops. Also note the advance rail fares from London are amazingly cheap. With a railcard it only costs me £3.60 each way.

Three musicals…(all the above is spot on) I was doing a bit of a delve into the dark side of Google yesterday to see what traces were already lurking before Thursday. Is the third musical an adaptation of a classic TV drama?
