Really bored of Tom Hanks in everything now. It feels like every 2nd film on Netflix is staring TH.

I know it's Disney, but does nobody have any imagination anymore? It looks exactly like the over 80 year old cartoon, so what's the point if nothing has progressed in all the time? Not even a different colour of feather for his hat FFS!

Not even a different colour of feather for his hat FFS! All of the Disney live-action remakes have been soulless cash-grabs banking on a generation's nostalgia, remaking films designed for the animated medium almost 1 to 1 with superficial changes resulting in inherently inferior films because they're trying to awkwardly jam these stories into a medium they weren't built for (The Lion King may be the worst offender in this regard which is ironic since it's technically not live-action!). They also all feature these pointless and annoying "fixes" to things from the originals that pedantic nit-pickers couldn't suspend their disbelief for despite the movies being animated, fantastical, children's films. Not to mention the completely shallow insertion of these "girlboss" moments that have totally no impact on the story and seem like an attempt to respond to largely mild critiques of the original films' depiction of femininity so that Disney get to pat themselves on the back for doing a feminism or whatever (Belle and Jasmine suffer in this regard especially). They're all just terrible films and besides, Disney are a terrible company who don't deserve financial support especially not for something as artistically bankrupt as these films.

Disney and their whole soulless remake/MCU/franchise money machine need taking apart. I know there are plenty of decent films out there at the lower end of the budget spectrum but there definitely seem to be far fewer interesting, original, and inspired blockbuster/action/kids films these days. Why would studios bother when they can make another committee-designed, algorithm-directed film based on some existing IP and guarantee a billion dollars at the box office. Everything feels so risk averse these days.

I've seen speculation that it's somehow about refreshing the ownership or copyright or whatever as the films start to come into public domain, though other sites saying no, so...

I'd be interested to see a pie chart on how many hours of film and TV made in the last decade are original stories vs. how many are remakes, spin-offs, prequels, sequels, 'origin stories', musical versions or even biopics about the actors, directors and writers who appeared in the 20th century originals!

Adaptations and remakes have been around since the dawn of cinema and TV. I don't see the issue myself personally.

Adaptations and remakes have been around since the dawn of cinema and TV. I don't see the issue myself personally. They're often not as good but get circulated (because obviously more monetisable) rather than the superior original, so audiences are ill served, and from a creative point of view it means studios aren't putting their energies and money into making original material, new stories by living writers.

Yeah and I have no problem with remakes in theory. Del Toro's Nightmare Alley was a clear recent example of a remake made with passion, craft and intention (I mean, obviously it was not made based on its bankability as a popular property), but these Disney remakes are not made with art as the motivation and it shows. I'm not saying something artistically worthwhile can't be brought out of a project made with purely economic motivations, but it's certainly a lot less likely.

Here it is, the official trailer.
I don't know about you guys but I reckon it looks pretty good.
I'm impressed by the whole 'look' of this- the whale looks great! As does the Blue Fairy. Listen for that distinctive Tom Hanks laugh.
Gepetto, the cat and goldfish and Jiminy Circket all look pretty close to the original. As so the fox and cat that lead Pinocchio astray.
And we also get to see the Great Stromboli
(For me) exciting stuff.

I agree, although I thought the first teaser trailer released a few months ago was a bit more spine tingling with wywuas playing in background. I personally have found the direct to Disney plus live action remakes (lady and the tramp, chip n dale rescue rangers) have been far better than the cinema releases so I have high hopes for this too. It seems to have a real disney magic feel to it and capture some of what made the original such an incredible movie

Looks good to me. Think I saw the original once a long time ago, but I’d never watch it again. Will see the remake though.
I don’t think the remakes are soulless at all. Someone who loves the original will always find problems with a remake, but it’s not as if the originals are being deleted. Really don’t see the issue.

Why can't I see films in the cinema any more? I don't get it, still haven't seen Soul and would love to have seen Turning Red on the big screen too.

Live action Pinocchio? Without The Krankies? They’ve missed a trick here. Disappointing .

I love the Disney Studio Chorus, and don't think I like the new ones as much without them... They give a particular sound to the older Disney films.

I love Disney films and will make time to go and see then at the cinema when released. (from memory) the last ones I saw were Frozen + Frozen II and Encanto

Well, as the Coachman himself might say, this movie is “bollocks” LOL I had forgotten this was being released this week until I saw someone had posted in this thread, and was getting excited about watching when I get home until I actually read it. I am giving serious thought to cancelling Disney Plus to save a few quid and looking at the score on IMDB I think that might be a good choice (there are a few other things on there I have either given up on or have no interest in seeing)

Not even a different colour of feather for his hat FFS! It's not just Disney, but every major studio. They all want franchises or reboots of familiar successful properties. I don't understand why they don't just invest in imagination and paying writers to create new fables for a general audience. Quite frankly, the animated films of "Pinnochio," with it's innovation in the use of the multiplane camera, as well as "The Little Mermaid," with it's Ashman and Menkin score, were great examples of traditional 2-D animation, wonderful stories and scores, and hitting just the right balance of emotional notes. It costs so much to go to the cinema these days; I can't imagine wasting my money to see something old disguised as something new.

I just watched this movie and it is terrible. Just terrible.
The whole message of the original story is that beautiful opening "When you wish upon a star" and that with perseverance, character and hard work your dreams can come true. Well, that's all removed. During the 4 second Disney studio's opening Jiminy Cricket comes hanging in and says 1 line and the film starts. No more beautiful song, no more atmosphere.
Then we see all of Gepetto's clocks, just like the original, but this time all of the clocks contain other Disney classics (Sleeping beauty, etc) and everything has turned politically correct. We see the clock where a mom slaps her naughty child on the ass, just like the original, but this time a police officer is added, who points a finger at the mother.
Then the blue fairy comes in. Extremely bad acting and singing. This is supposed to be a dream-like figure, like a mesmerizing sort of conscience. Cynthia Erivo looked like a sassy hairdresser that came straight out of hell. One hand in her side. Saying her lines with her eyes rolling, in a manner as if she was gossiping at the local hairdressers. Because every theme in the film has changed and is now supposed to be politically correct, she held a very confusing monologue that basically takes away all enthusiasm to even watch any further. She tells Jiminy Cricket to be Pinocchio's conscience to learn about right from wrong, only that is not necessary anymore, because she decides to make Pinocchio very clever and all-knowing from the start. So basically his role can disappear, it has no point anymore. Pinocchio does not lie anymore either, because he is already more clever and sincere than anyone else, he only lies to manipulate, for example to deliberately grow his nose in a scene to let Jiminy cricket walk on his nose to enter the cage, ad then says, haha I got you, I lied deliberately to grow my nose so I could save Jiminy. So it's some kind of strange lesson in how to manipulate. Very weird. After a lot more of this drivel, she flies away with very bad CGI and sings the most terrible reprise of "When you wish upon a star" that you have ever heard. Dry, flat, forced, damaged, she slides up towards all her notes but then does not reach the actual note. I mean, she actually does not reach it. Her casting and "singing" just completely failed. I feel that basically every other actress would have been better in this role.
The rest of the film is jarring, Pinocchio knowing things happening in advance because he is so clever, and at the end of course he is NOT turning into a real boy, because that would not be politically correct, to change your body for others, or whatever drivel was behind it. What on earth is happening.
