Where do I start? Possibly the most wonderful night at the theatre I've had in 31 years of venturing into the West End.
Utterly joyous and magical.

Bernadette is never off l During her run in Gypsy, she was barely ON. And not all of it was because of voice issues.

Has anyone heard Bernadette Peters sing Sooner or Later? I have the CD of her Carnagie Hall concert. The whole second act is dedicated to Sondheim. When she goes to sing Sooner or Later she says something along the lines of 'this song was from a movie that was out a couple of summers ago. It was based on a comic strip called Dick! Dick Tracey! And in the film this song was sung by a blonde bombshell- not me. Though we both have religious names.....'
Yes, I've heard that many times! Camp!!

I also love her Dainty June/bio anecdote before STEAMROLLING through Some People. I believe it was the night Arthur Laurents cast her on the spot as Rose for Sam Mendes' revival, vetoing poor La LuPone once again. More camp!

In fact she missed almost NO performances in GYPSY once she got through the rocky preview period that was much-chronicled at the time. And she was astonishing in it, I have to say. BP's attendance record is one of her strengths; Donna Murphy she ain't.

I would have LOVED to have seen Bernie in Gypsy. Probably in my top 5 wish list of "go back in a time machine" performances

From the recording and videos I've seen, Gypsy didn't seem to suit her vocally, but I bet her acting was great.

BP's attendance record is one of her strengths; Donna Murphy she ain't. In fact the week AFTER opening she did 3 performances out of 8. it slowly improved but it was a long time before she did 8 shows a week
What does 'Almost NO' mean? She either missed performances, or she didn't. After Gypsy, her attendance has been excellent, but certainly not during that production.
I saw it too. She was Ok, but it wasn't her best. I also saw it with her understudy, Maureen Moore, who IMO, was far better than Peters was, but that was early in the run. I wish we could have seen what Mendes really intended for the show to be, not what it became after Laurents got involved.

I went a few weeks ago and stage door was pretty busy, at least compared to usual West End standards. At least 50 people in a large crowd behind barracudas, all seemingly waiting for Bernadette and Lea. This was a matinee and off the top of my head a few of the ensemble came out along with Jeremy Seacomb and Bonnie Langford. Neither Lea or Bernadette emerged, but they might for the evening shows.

When I was there lots of people came out and were happy to sign and pose for photos. Bonnie Langford and Janie Dee were particularly lovely. No Bernadette, Lea or Bradley though - according to the security chap, it's just too big a risk in terms of Covid etc.

Do you think I'll catch her before she goes into the theatre If you have any respect for her you wouldn’t try. If a performer wants to meet people at the stage door after the show then that’s great but if they feel that they don’t, you really shouldn’t try bothering them before the show! Bernadette and Lea are the stars of this concert and I’m sure they’re doing their best to not miss a single show, respect their decision to not stage door.

For those wondering about Bernadette in Gypsy, listen to her last Rose’s turn on YouTube. I think it’s one of the greatest performances ever, and a departure from what she did earlier in the run. Arthur Laurents also noted this change in his book Mainly on Directing.

I think all this 'stage door' business should stop - the performers have done enough already.
Was this even 'a thing' back in the day (like saying 'a thing' is today). Surely (for example) when 'Evita' launched in 1978 you could be an audience member leaving the theatre, go round the corner heading home, and see Elaine Paige already tucking into her Spaghetti Bolognese sat outside Bar Italia.

It always has been a thing, and it's part of the job, they know what they are signing up to, if they don't like it then they wouldn't work in theatre, same way if you want to be famous you can't stop people from recognising you. At the speedy of love final performance there were loads of people waiting outside the stage door before the actors went in.

I think there is a secret exit at the Gielgud. I’ve seen the show a few times now and Lea & Bernadette literally do not come out of stage door or the main entrance. Bonnie signed for me once and was the sweetest. It was the day Hayden died. The ones I have not spotted once are: Lea, Bernadette, Christine, Clare, Jannie, Jo or Beatrice. The rest have come out. I’ve waited until midnight before I have no idea where they go 🤣.
