As much as I know it's for charity, I hope the sales from this screening flop and they are forced to re-evaluate pricing. It's the worst kind of elitism.

I guess nobody here has ever been to Secret Cinema, that charges similar amounts to what the Sondheim screening is charging and yet still sells very well.

Isn't secret cinema basically immersive theatre, though? Not just watching a broadcast of something happening elsewhere?

I don't think they're really the same — at Secret Cinema you wander around, there are performers doing scenes, you can join in dance lessons etc (well, depending on the film!), there's food and drink to buy that fits in with the theme. It's a whole night out based around a film, not just a screening.
And it definitely isn't always £95 — the weekday events are usually £50-60 I think.

I mean, if this was Secret Cinema, you'd have lots of actors dressed as characters from Sondheim shows walking through the theatre, interacting with the audience, acting out scenes, singing the songs and then at the end you'd watch the livecast, with people acting out the songs at times as you also see them on the screen. Now that, I might shell out 60 quid for. :-)

But accurate! No way am I paying those prices for a screening. If they were genuine about opening up to people they'd either stage this on more than one night or they'd choose a better venue that could accommodate more. I don't buy the whole 'it must be at the Sondheim' because it has his name on it...the great man never went to that theatre while it was the Sondheim (I do wonder if he broke his leg in 2019 to avoid having to sit through the '21st century' Miz and only one of his shows ever played there, to my knowledge). This will be released at some point...I'm not in a rush to see yet another compilation tribute show that I need to pay for a screening of this at those prices. |

I'm looking forward to going to the screening. Nice they're including a mini bottle of fizz and the souvenir brochure of the evening, to add to the collection.

Is it? Is it nice? I think it’s appalling, and more fool anyone that pays that amount to go to the cinema. Getting a mini bottle of Prosecco and a programme is the very least they should be doing. You should get a free tattoo and a hoodie too. Whining that its for charity is a total misnomer. It is an elitist con, pure and simple, and the more that we pay into these events making (mainly) Cam Mac think it’s acceptable the more he’ll milk the cash cow.

Something I don’t understand… the email says that all profits from the proper show and the stream go to charity, so why did the original event say that the £1250 tickets included a £1000 donation to the charity?

Also re: the programme and prosecco, you only get those if you’re sat in the stalls or dress circle, obviously the plebs “only” paying £55/£30 aren’t entitled to that!

Not so long ago when the original Les Mis closed even Cameron was willing to stretch to a glass of fizz for everyone in the theatre, yet for this he can't even do that! |

The profits go to charity, not the costs of running the show. The ushers still have to be paid, the buildings heated, the “free” champagne paid for etc. The £1250 tickets are only priced at £250, of which a portion will go to charity. They then include a voluntary £1,000 donation too. Tax relief can likely be claimed against the £1,000 (but not the £250), which will appeal to some. Often, you can also contact the theatres directly to buy these seats without the optional donation, although there are legal complexities there. |
