Reading the problems over at Wicked, especially post cast-change, it got me thinking... there have been some performers I've attended shows multiple times trying to see, but they are always off for a variety of reasons.
I tried four times to see Peter Howe as Sam and Michael Thierrault as Gollum in The Lord of the Rings - every time they were both off.
On the flip side, there have been principals I've not been fussed about seeing but rather liked the understudy, and booked for their scheduled performances. Somehow, the principal has walked on stage, despite my efforts!
I loved Jon Jon Briones in Miss Saigon, but had seen his performance to death and tried to see his alternate Christian Rey Marbella just for variety. First time, Jon Jon shows up. Second time, Jon Jon again. So the third time I was extra careful, I waited until Jon Jon was physically out of the country by stalking his social media. Guaranteed not to be on!
I saw the second cover Romeo Salazar (who was brilliant).

I can only think of one performer I have tried to see a few times and has not been on. Connie Fisher when she did They're Playing Our Song. Finally got to see her after 4 attempts.

I had understudies on for Killian Donnelly in Phantom, Kinky Boots, The Commitments and Billy Elliot. Not gonna complain, as I really wanted to see James Gant in Phantom

Missed Vanessa Redgrave in both Driving Miss Daisy and The Inheritance. May finally get to see her in My Fair Lady.

Bradley Jaden is so so so so rarely off in Les Mis. I keep trying to catch his understudies, but he barely gets any dates (today being one of them!)

Miriam Teak Lee. In ‘Hamilton’ and ‘& Juliet’. It’s like she knows I’m coming…

Oh and this isn't a principal, but I've gone to les mis about 6 times in the past couple of months and only caught Rodney on as the Bishop about once.

I have a couple of friends who are 'doomed' - we joke about never booking for a show on the same day as them. The principals are off without fail when they go, whatever the show is - either holidays which they didn't know about, the day the alternate is on (they don't research things like some of us do!), or just plain illness.

I was disappointed not to see Killian when I first saw Memphis (a week’s holiday I’d not been aware of when I booked). But the alternate Huey was Jon Robyns, so every cloud…

I always seem to miss the principal Phantom. I'd booked to see Ben Forster and more recently Killian and both times ended up with the alternate.

I love seeing different casts. In Spamalot Sanjeev Bhaskar was the only main Arthur I failed to see as the first time I booked turned into a scheduled day off and the second time he was off. I love that we have @westendcovers on Twitter now and have been excited sometimes to see the cover is on!

This thread is hilarious. Complaining that the leads were on. How have two people liked this comment? It's fair enough not liking my input to the forum, but I didn't for a second do what you're suggesting. If you have an issue with someone else DM me, but don't derail the thread, READ the OP for a start.

I feel a bit bad about saying this, given what happened to her, but I booked a matinee of Chicago in the hopes of avoiding Caroline Flack. It worked. Couldn’t tell you who actually was on though.

I found trying to catch all three 'witches' in the The Witches of Eastwick at the same time a challenge during the Drury Lane run (though oddly had a better hit rate after transfer to the Prince of Wales)
