I mean for these as well, people don't need to have seen anything to vote. Someone with social media following who can egg on their followers to vote is probably going to win these.

At least Sutton is nominated here too!!

I’m surprised that neither Saoirse Ronan nor James McArdle got in the shortlist, but Akiya Henry did. Also infuriated with the Charles Edwards and Ben Daniels’s snubs here (yet their supporting co-stars are nominated), though I trust the critics and the Olivier jury on who gets in the final nominees. I also think that Lily Allen will get nominated for the Olivier. She’s gonna bring in ratings, I guess?

I’ll have to do a leaderboard on who’s who in the running, across the UK theatre awards circle. Although a good number of the nominees from BWWUK and WOS are non-SOLT houses, so I’d have to trim it to focus on SOLT-eligible productions.

Maybe CHF, maybe Sutton Foster because she was at a larger theatre. I think being at the small Almeida counted against Ronan and McArdle.

I've voted, but this will be like WOS with the person who has the biggest online fan base winning.
Surprised Robert Lindsey not nominated for best supporting actor.
I wad very honest and only voted for shows I have seen rather than my favourite actor and didn't vote in any of the play categories as I hadn't seen any.

HA. I guess it'll be those youtube streaming events of his filmed back catalogue, even if it did include the downright dreadful By Jeeves. Most of it was regurgitated content that's been on Sky Arts etc.

A big omission in that category is NT for their weekly NTLive youtube uploads during Lockdown 1.0. Got to see some incredible theatre I'd not had the chance to see before, all for free, whilst isolating. NT is much more deserving of that award IMO than ALW.

Interesting thoughts here. So McAvoy won the audience awards (this and WOS) but lost the Olivier to Andrew Scott and same with the Critics Circle where Andrew won that time (since CC doesn’t announce the shortlist/nominees). Given the Evening Standard Theatre Awards will be far away in November, I don’t know if the long three-year gap will require like 10 nominees and 2 winners. I wish they just held the awards around the weeks before the Oliviers, instead of the usual November. James’ audience wins indicate that he would have been second place in the Olivier final votes two years ago.

Though the gender-neutral categories are good, seeing the acting winners here, it’s mostly male. There’s a reason why we love Best Actress categories (regardless if it’s the Oscars or elsewhere) more often than the Best Actor. It’s fun to analyze and delve deeper into things in context.

I wish they separated the new productions and the revivals.
