As someone who enjoyed Adam Kay's one man show based on the book of the same name, I've been looking forward to this for a while ever since it was announced as a TV series a few years back. I hope it manages to captures the same mix of dark humour and gut wrenching moments that Adam managed to portray in his show and also the book.

I noticed one of the best lines from the book and show has been changed slightly, as they've swapped Sooty for Kermit the Frog, I assume it's because non UK audiences wouldn't get the joke as Sooty is not known outside of the UK |

That was brilliant. Jet black humour and affecting drama I shouldn't have laughed at much as I did, Ben as Adam was cracking and he's not someone known for being funny. I found it interesting that Adam wasn't out to his colleague, was there really still prejudice for medical professionals to be gay even in 2006? |

I also thought this was absolutely brilliant and funnier than I was expecting. Another great performance from Ben Whishaw.

The one liners by Adam were great although the situations he dealt with were grim and not just the C section bits.

I watched it for Mr Whishaw and was looking forward to it but I really didn't warm to it. I know it's about the stresses of the job etc etc. but I felt the vets in All Creatures Great and Small showed more empathy towards their patients than this character. Maybe it will develop but it was so centred on the man in a ward full of women it grated.

Wanted to like this but turned over after ten minutes. But then I think this is possibly because, having had one caesarean and two normal, scary deliveries, it all felt a bit too stressful and brought back some memories I'd rather not relive! I have seen quite a lot of criticisms like that of crowblack about lack of empathy. |

I don't think Adam in the show or indeed the real Adam didn't care about his patients but that in a busy hospital environment, there isn't time to be nice to every patient.

Four episodes in and enjoying it so far. I really enjoyed the book (and the Christmas follow up). With only three episodes to go I wish they’d made more to be honest!

This is great isn't it. Had held of watching as was always eating my tea and thought might just be grim and it is grim (why is there still a view that working ridiculous amounts of hours is something that junior doctors just have to go through cos everyone else did even if the results mean they're making decisions when half asleep?) but very funny too. BW superb but well acted all round. I didn't think it showed lack of empathy more reality, too many patients, too few staff and resources so too little time. Could easily binge watch this.

I really enjoyed watching this "old style" one episode a week. Plenty of laughs and then tears, during the last 2 episodes especially. Ben Whishaw was brilliant throughout and Ambika Mod as Shruti was heart-breaking in episode 6. I look forward to seeing her career progress. Shocking to see the realities in the private hospital scenes but sadly not surprising. We are so lucky to have the NHS and all who work there.

It was a fantastic series, but not for the faint hearted. I sort-of get why some people might be concerned about the supposed 'lack of empathy' for patients, but that rather misses the point, and IMO lacks empathy for the healthcare staff who work under ridiculous pressure with not nearly enough support.
I thought it interesting that he wasn't originally out at work, but I put it down to his own insecurities, a lack of energy to challenge assumptions and desire to compartmentalise his life. I worked in the NHS in the early noughties, and I'm not saying there was no homophobia, but I had a lot of colleagues who were out. Far more than anywhere else I've worked.
Don't assume life is rosy for vets either. I've not seen the latest series of All Creatures Great and Small, but if it has the same vibe as the original, it's completely unrealistic. A very high proportion give up the profession within a few years of qualifying and still vets have one of the highest suicide rates in the country.
