When I went to see pantomimes, they had people like Cilla Black, Harry H Corbett, Jon Pertwee and Brian Murphy in them (yes, I am that old but I was only about 10 when I saw them): good Lord the quality levels have dipped since (my local panto had Dick & Dom and Derek Griiffiths last Christmas and no I wasn’t tempted by that) Not tempted by Derek Griffiths? Are you broken? The king of Playschool? I always preferred Brian Cant (not sure why he never changed his name for the stage) |

It requires stamina, patience and good humour to get through a panto season unscathed. |

Two, sometimes three shows a day, six days a week. In comparison Shakespeare is a walk in the park. |

I'd not been to a panto for many years, but went to the one in Manchester this year and I remember sitting there thinking how much effort some of the cast were putting in. The Dame and wishee-washee were hardly offstage and there was a lot of physical action involved in their roles so to perform that several times a day must have required some stamina |

Derek Hatton, the politician from Liverpool, once appeared as King Rat in pantomime at the Tameside Theatre , Greater Manchester. I’ve no idea what his performance was like, but I can’t imagine what possessed the producers to think this appearance could pass as interesting or entertaining. Bizarre.

I once saw former page 3 star, Linda Lusardi with very low expectations. Aaaaand it was not bad. As far as I'm aware she's done it every year for many many years now, so I imagine she's quite good! |
