Not a thread of the value of the status of what counts as a celebrity in a panto, more if that person actually brings anything of value to the overall show. So it does not matter if you've never heard of them but more so if their talents help you enjoy the show.
So currently at the Theatre Royal Plymouth for Aladin starting Joe Pasquale and despite the fact I like him overall as a performer, I am witnessing such a sad sight, a man hurtling towards AOP who's entire act for the show is to thrust his hips and wiggle his bum at the audience.
I know his act was never highbrow, but it was better then this, I've never seen a Panto not even attempt to incorporate a star casting into a show like this before, its the most lazy production I have ever seen. It gives every detractor of Pantomime a free pass for criticism.
I've had the honor of seeing some of the best in light entertainment in my local Panto over the last 30 years, but tonight has made me very sad.

I usually find the big American stars who do it for the money are the worst- Priscilla Presley a few years ago at Wimbledon I think it was seemed bemused more than anything. Ditto Mickey Rooney.

trying to be kind about the Americans as panto must be so alien to them. Funnily enough I am always apprehensive about the Dame - I've seen female impersonators and drag queens get the Dame so wrong.

True, but I've seen Donny Osmond and David Hasselhoff in panto, both were superb. It's an attitude thing. They threw themselves into it and committed to the silliness. Some stars seem to be under the delusion that it's beneath them. And I fully agree about the Dame. It's such a skilled performance. Part comic, part actor, part variety act, part improv comedian.

I've never seen a Panto not even attempt to incorporate a star casting into a show like this before Just as an aside, in my day the speciality acts weren't properly incorporated either - as Billy Connolly memorably observed "Now that we are all alone, I think I'll play my xylophone".

I've never seen any reeeally bad celebs in panto, all the ones I've seen have been the standard panto casting: kids' tv presenters, former soap stars, older pop singers etc who all pretty much "get it" and fit nicely alongside the veteran comedians/dames etc.
Sad about Joe Pasquale if that's the case though. I've always liked him.
I'd hate to see a modern-day "drag act" as a dame though, it's something of a different skillset entirely.
I'm also not a big fan of the dame being the Fairy Godmother or Wicked Queen. So many panto casts are male-heavy and it takes those roles away from older actresses who can do them brilliantly.

I had the misfortune to see a panto in Derby a few years ago where there was indeed someone doing the Dame as a drag act. It was as bad as you imagine. Fortunately they changed the company doing the pantos and the new company has made massive improvements and there is now a proper Dame that also runs the panto company and so really gets it.

I remember walking past the Opera House in Manchester when Priscilla Presley was in Snow White. They were literally giving tickets away in the street , not something I’ve ever seen before although I know it happens .

Back in the 60s it was quite common for popular singers of the day to be advertised as the star name in a pantomime , but in fact they’d just be included as an interlude , to perform a few of their songs, but not really as part of the pantomime. I have a flyer for Dusty Springfield headlining one such pantomime in Liverpool, as far as I know she just made an appearance unrelated to the pantomime . I’d be interested to hear from anyone who saw any of these kind of pantomimes , Dusty Springfield apparently hated her first panto experience and never repeated it. Susan Maughan made at least one panto “guest star” experience (Southampton, with Little & Large when they were Syd & Eddie) but went on to become one of the finest principal boys in the business , a real class act .
Different for the lead comedian of course , which is what this thread is really about , there should be real engagement with the show , they are supposed to carry the show.
Frank Bruno was dreadful when I saw him in a panto . He didn’t actually do anything .

Frank Bruno was dreadful when I saw him in a panto . He didn’t actually do anything . Surely he said "Know what I mean 'arry ?" a few times ? That's not nothing. Should be a separate thread for boxers on stage. John Conteh was in a production of Blood Brothers once for example. I recall poor old Brian Matthew on Radio 2 interviewing him to promote it and in his introduction he incorrectly listed Conteh's boxing titles and Conteh immediately complained about that just before the line to him mysteriously got cut off and the normally benign and soporific Matthew launched into a crazed rant about Conteh's questionable commitment to the arts and the general disgrace of non-actors appearing on stage taking work from Equity members. All good fun.

Yes indeed , they did two pantomimes there , Cinderella and Aladdin . They took part in the actual story rather than just being a musical interlude , which is what Dusty did . In later years of course quite a few pop stars of the day made successful pantomime appearances, Mark Wynter was a very successful principal boy, Freddie Garitty and the Dreamers did many pantos , Marty Wild made at least one appearance , and of course Cilla Black .

I saw Kriss Akabusi in panto at Woking IIRC some years ago. All he did was come on, round around the stage for a bit and then laugh before running off stage. I think he did that a couple of times. It was completely pointless.

I don't know if she ever did a guest spot unrelated to the main story.

What was Ian Botham like during his panto run. Not an obvious performer. John Virgo likewise?

When I went to see pantomimes, they had people like Cilla Black, Harry H Corbett, Jon Pertwee and Brian Murphy in them (yes, I am that old but I was only about 10 when I saw them): good Lord the quality levels have dipped since (my local panto had Dick & Dom and Derek Griiffiths last Christmas and no I wasn’t tempted by that)

I have a programme in my collection from the Gaumont (now Mayflower) Theatre, Southampton for the 1965-66 season which lists Susan Maughan as making a guest appearance, also Syd Little is on record as saying Susan Maughan didn’t want a “speaking” role that year, she had a singing spot in the ballroom scene (the article mistakenly says the year was 1969).
