Also a lot depends on the size of the theatre and how many people have seen the show. It really doesn't, you don't even have to have seen the show to vote. It's all about who has the most recognisable name and/or which people or shows can mobilise voting through their social media. Entirely explains why Redmayne won and Buckley didn't - he is a recognisable name, she isn't. And she doesnt use social media and was up against someone with an adoring legion of fans who think she can do no wrong and more importantly think nothing of spending hours voting for things like this and using social media to encourage others to do likewise. It's what makes these awards a joke. If you read my comment all the way through you will see that I have said exactly what you have pointed out and the size of the theatre was just one point I made which I still believe is a valid point. But on the rest of your points I agree and that is what I said. 😀

Such a shame Pride and Prejudice* (*Sort Of) didn't win any awards. It really deserves some recognition in at least one awards show this year!

Yes, these awards are a bit of a joke, and not to be taken seriously. Any poll that is quantitative rather than qualitative will have this outcome.
It would be so easy to go some way to fix this too. (Obviously, you can never get round fans voting en masse for their idols, even for shows they haven't seen, but some improvements could be made.)
Here's what WoS could do:
- Measures to restrict votes to one per person - Present a list of all the shows that have nominations and ask users to select which ones they have seen - Only present nominations where the show has been seen - Rather than pick a favourite, ask users to give a rating on a five-point scale for each nomination where the middle option is a good solid performance - Give the award to the nomination with the highest average rating - You'd probably want to discard any nomination receiving too few votes as the sample size would not give a fair indication

The WOS Awards are like the theatrical equivalent of the NTAs but thankfully we don't have Ant and Dec winning every year.

Richard Armitage ? Is Astrov even a leading role in Uncle Vania rather than a supporting role ? Maybe, but the best performance in that was Toby Jones - not nominated despite his TV fame.

Now I'd generally watch anything with Toby Jones it it and he has been in quite a lot of big films, Hunger games, Marvel etc but is he a 'name' for your average person voting (since I think we've agreed it isn't necessarily theatre going people who are doing a lot of the voting). Does Richard Armitage swing it on the basis of the hobbit?
But yeah I'd have picked TJ over RA for Uncle Vanya and I'd have said it was a supporting role too.
Is that why Ant and Dec win every year then, public vote? I've never watched their show but do raise my eyebrows every year at them winning for the umpteenth time but if it's a public vote that explains it, very popular.
