I saw Don’t Look Up this afternoon: I don’t think it’s the sort of thing that Meryl Streep will get a nomination for but I was impressed with Leonardo DiCaprio, he kind of simmers for long stretches before exploding into angry outbursts (Cate Blanchett, Mark Rylance, Jennifer Lawrence and Timothee Chalomet are also in it but not the kind of roles that would get them nominated imho: not sure if it’s the kind of film that will get a best picture nod either)

Benedict Cumberbatch and Andrew Garfield will pick up noms for Power of the Dog and TTB respectively and I imagine the two of them will fight it out for best actor.
Actress is a fight between Gaga and Stewart (although I'd like to see Rachel Zegler up there)
Best supp actress looks to be an exciting race - likely people in that race would be Rebecca Ferguson, Catriona Balfe and Kirsten Dunst - and I would imagine either Ariana DeBose or Rita Moreno - it'll be one of the two but unlikely to be both.
WSS will be up for best picture, alongside stuff like Dune, Belfast, Power of the Dog, Tragedy of Macbeth and King Richard.

General consensus and awards nominations list so far suggest it will be DeBose, though I wouldn't be surprised if the Golden Globes nominate both of them. Dunst seems to be losing a bit of momentum in terms of winning (most critics expect it to be between Balfe, Aunjanue Ellis and DeBose now) and I haven't seen Ferguson on many critics' predictions lists at all.

Yes, from what I've read Smith is widely expected to win. Garfield is the main challenger.

I’m glad that Licorice Pizza got a couple of nominations (although nothing acting wise) as it’s probably my favourite film of last year but there’s nothing else that I am that bothered about. I’m surprised neither Lady Gaga or Jared Leto got a nomination for House Of Gucci, especially Leto with his ‘bold’ performance : ‘boof!’ indeed 😂

I'm really glad Kristen Stewart ended up getting her nomination for 'Spencer', a lot of people had written her off after she'd failed to garner many other nominations this award season.

Jude Hill getting supporting for Belfast is wrong as he was clearly lead.

Power Of The Dog is a miserable attempt at a true life western. I did not get to the end.

Brilliant to see Jessie Buckley getting nominated! Almost feels overdue!
If she gets an Olivier Award nomination this year (as she undoubtedly will), will she be the first to do that particular double in the same year?

It's absolutely hilarious to nominate Branagh for the mediocre Belfast and Anderson for the outright insipid Licorice Pizza and not Villeneuve for Dune. The Oscars will become even more irrelevant if they ignore film-makers who actually manage to sell tickets, and Dune, while flawed, is a serious achievement in immersive cinema.

Belfast is an exceptional film, particularly if you understand anything about the history of the place or have any connection to it. Good cinema doesn't have to be brash and full of special effects, I'd much rather watch something that makes me reflect.

Dune? What a borefest. I enjoyed Licorice Pizza and Belfast much more.

As always with the Oscars, the odd bit of excellence and the odd bit of excrement have found their way in, but it's mainly stuff in the mediocre-to-good band. In Hollywood, it's about money, not talent.
Too many people, including Academy voters, are watching movies on televisions rather than at the cinema. I think people are a lot more forgiving of weak writing/directing/acting on the small screen than on the big screen or the stage.

I thought The Power of the Dog was a very chilly affair. The storyline and 'reveals' were probably novel when the original story was written in the 1960s but these days they're what you'd expect from an 'art house' Western, and it was hard to care about or engage with any of the characters, who felt always held at arm's length. I heard a reviewer saying it was 'best seen on the big screen', but it's made for Netflix on your TV, so...

I heard a reviewer saying it was 'best seen on the big screen', but it's made for Netflix on your TV, so... I saw it on the big screen. While it's a solid four-star movie, it's not awards-worthy, apart from for cinematography and Cumberbatch's performance. I also don't get the love for Don't Look Up. Maybe it's mildly engaging on tv, but, at the cinema, where I saw it, its flaws are writ large. It doesn't work as a comedy, as it's not funny. As a satire, it takes too long to make its point, and the ride drags. Streep veers between pantomime villain and playing it straight in one of her rare bad performances. Rylance was the best thing about this.

I finally got to see CODA at the cinema tonight. While West Side Story was the better film and more deserving of the Best Picture Oscar, I was pleasantly surprised by CODA. It's got a few wrinkles, but you can't help but be won over by it. Five stars I think.
