Can only see this listed for Newcastle currently but I imagine it is the start or part of a tour. An interesting one to put on stage as the film cast were just too good (kind of like how I felt about the Shawshank play, it was never going to live up to it). "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is now a major new theatre production. Based on the best-selling novel by Deborah Moggach, and the BAFTA and Golden Globe nominated film, be one of the first to experience the story we know and love, brought to vibrant life on stage. Get set for the journey of a lifetime, as seven British retirees arrive in Jaipur, each embarking on their own personal adventures. A chaotic and dilapidated hotel hosts the tourists, run by enthusiastic, but hapless young entrepreneur Sonny. Each of our guests has a past and a new ambition, from rekindling long-lost love, to undergoing cheap hip surgery. Their lives soon intertwine with their host, who is also searching for a higher purpose, and struggling with a girlfriend whose family disapproves. Paths cross and discoveries await each one; their voyage to India affecting each of our characters in different ways, awakening some, and embittering others. Be swept away by enchanting set, spectacular costumes, and beautiful storytelling, as this play reminds us that no matter how old you are, life is what you make it." www.theatreroyal.co.uk/whats-on/the-best-exotic-marigold-hotel/

It’ll be interesting to see this as a stage adaptation. A lot of what made the films so enjoyable was the casting, something which would just be impossible to replicate for the stage.

Newcastle 4th to 8th October 2022.
Can't find a website for the tour. Google just thinks I want to go on an actual Indian tour... 🤣

Unless August has suddenly gained an extra 8 days, I assume Baz means 29th August.

What does a ‘sit-down production’ mean? It means a show that stays in one theatre for an open run, rather than tours around.

I wonder if they have a theatre lined up or hoping one becomes available?

This isn't a musical, it's a play, and there's already a thread for it in the Plays section.

And the 'sit down' theatre is presumably the Trafalgar, as Trafalgar Entertainment are one of the co-producers...

Lol. Not the film, but we’re going to cash in on the name anyway.

Mater has been to this afternoon's matinee, one of three, so it knows its target audience.
It's best to take everything she says with a pinch of salt.
"Did you enjoy it?" "I wouldn't go again." "How many things do you see twice?" "Some musicals." "There's a composer credited." "I don't think I heard any music...and I was there before it started." "It's a comedy, isn't it? "Is it? I don't remember anybody laughing."

You think you're funny don't you, BurlyBeaR? You'd get on well, though she'd never get your name right first time. Like you, she never ovates; in her case it's due to age and infirmity. You weren't there this afternoon, were you? She used a different word, but the man sitting in front of her was rather burly. Over such a long life, she will have seen the R&H standards many times. I know for a fact, because I was with her, that she's seen Les Miserables at least four times, in four different cities. We've both seen the Kenwright version of Joseph 20 times or more. I know it has its critics, but it gave a lot of people a lot of pleasure over many years.

Saw this in Brighton last night and it was just all nice & cosy really.
Basically about as dramatic as dropping a soft mint in the gutter as you’re getting off the bus but I just couldn’t help really enjoying it.
Some performances better than others, Hayley Mills is super lovely. I love that she’s still got that inflection to her voice that she always had as a child. Very nostalgic.
Rula Lenska on the other hand could do with some less unwieldy dentures. And her hair looks like a red panda has gone into anaphylactic shock!
Marlene Sidaway great value, very reminiscent of her character in ‘Mum’ with Lesley Manville.
I wouldn’t recommend if you can’t handle anything too broad. Nice set & lighting too.

Well, that was a really enjoyable evening watching this tonight at the Lowry. A great hotel set from designer Colin Richmond dominates the stage with a few other bits and pieces to set other locations within the story. Put together with some nice lighting and sound from Oliver Fenwick and Mic Pool it really does feel that you really are in India.
It really is a heart warming production that provides plenty of laughs and fantastic one liners within the story in the 2.5hr run time to show that age is no barrier to enjoying life to its fullest. A wonderful cast has been assembled here and it really was a joy to see Hayley Mills on stage.
A well received production from tonight’s audience and a show that I am very happy to recommend booking for if it stops at a theatre in your area.

Happy to read the latest, david as I booked my usual bargain "Early Bird" ticket (£15 for any seat cf more than double at full price) as soon as booking opened for Guildford and as I can't recall anything of the film at this remove, comparisons wouldn't be an issue for me.
