I saw a press notice yesterday that the show isn't having a Press Night apparently. I'm assuming that doesn't bode well for any kind of London transfer.

That's funny as I defo have heard a west end transfer is happening but no date set yet. I'm hoping after Manchester we hear where the theatre and when the transfer is happening. |

The review would only be a quarter page in the Manchester Evening News anyway, framed by Costco & I’m A Celeb interactive experience ads!

Saw this last night and there’s so much to love. Gabriel Vick is absolutely brilliant, and it just wouldn’t work if he wasn’t as good as he is. He’s working his absolute socks off up there and the sheer number of times he has to get in and out of the doubtfire costume is amazing. Though, to be fair the cast is good almost across the board…
Make me a woman is a brilliant act one ensemble number that is positioned perfectly to get the audience on side - though last night it was clear the audience were already going to love it before even the first note was played. If the fans of the film in there last night is anything to go by it’ll definitely have a decent life over here. There were whoops at all the big movie moments. The rest of the music is a bit hit and miss - all the music moments land incredibly well while watching but for memorability it is a little lacking.
The only parts that didn’t work for me were that the tv show job plot took a major back seat despite clearly being crucial to the story. The other was the altered reveal of his identity in the restaurant, which just felt comparatively weak. I can see why it needed altering to make it more suited to being a musical but all of the main cast just end up sitting at their tables not doing an awful lot.
The set is also nicely done, even if it’s functional in places. Given the large number of locations it ends up cycling through, they do a good job of filling the stage. All in all it’s four stars from me.
(As an aside what is with people’s bladders these days?! The number of people in and out of the doors in the stalls going to the loo was ridiculous. It feels a bit like the ‘no re-entry’ rule at most theatres seems to have long gone out the window. Though the girl next to me who chucked half a pint of beer over me mid act one with the weakest ‘oh sorry’ I’ve ever had seemed to be pretty indicative of the alcohol level of certain pockets of people in there.)

Very much enjoyed this last night, with a great deal too for a solo front row seat (but could have done without the foot tapper behind me who was so violent he shook my seat - and he wasn’t even consistent or in time).
Full disclosure, I do love the film and made two attempts to see this in New York, neither of which worked out for various reasons. Can’t imagine the New York cast could be any better.
The show is changed a lot from the film, not least by the present day setting (which introduces all kinds of mobile phone and social media access plot holes), but those can be overlooked. Lots of funny lines throughout. A final speech that still brings tears to the eyes. And those fast costume changes are impressive (although no idea why they had to use the ALW Cinderella effect for the first one).
A busy audience (if not all people I’d want to be in an audience with). Can’t imagine there will be offers for this limited run. Can’t imagine this not being a hit in London.

I think it was 2 hours 25 minutes including the interval (but I'd allow for 2 hours 30 minutes).

Heck, what a hard working, quick changing cast - two shows a day must be a struggle, but great fun for us to watch. Definitely appreciated by the audience this afternoon.

Having been at todays matinee, Director Jerry Zaks and his team have done a really great job in bringing Mrs Doubtfire from the screen to the stage. In my opinion they managed to capture both the humour and warmth of the film and for me it worked really well as a musical. The updated elements within the show worked with the existing bits from the film.
Having the full cast on this afternoon, I have to say Gabriel Vick as Daniel/Mrs D is outstanding both vocally and in the acting and was worth the ticket price alone. The quick on stage costume changes he does are amazing. He delivered those iconic film moments every time and that fireside chat as Mrs D at the end is delivered with just as much emotional punch as Robin Williams did in the film to really tug at the heart strings. With respect to the other cast members, they really are a great bunch and all do their part to bring the characters to life to make a fantastic time at the theatre.
Set wise, whilst not as impressive as other shows in the “Manchester Gets It First” list, from where I was sitting this afternoon (row K in the Circle), the stage looked well utilised for the majority of the show.
The score from Wayne and Karey Kirkpatrick was fun to listen to with a nice mix of both fun and more emotional numbers in the mix. The Act 1 closer “I’m Rockin’ Now” and Act 2’s “Let Go” being particular favourites of mine. Whilst I would say the score works well within the context to the show to move proceedings forward, for me there where no songs in their that stuck in my head after leaving the theatre and it really wouldn’t be a score that I would rush to get on a download or CD. The orchestra of 10 sounded great and I didn’t have any issues hearing either them or the cast from where I was sat.
Overall, I really enjoyed this and definitely brought a smile to my face by the end of the show. It’s definitely worth a watch if you can get the opportunity.

Going to go against the consensus here and say I was fairly underwhelmed by tonight's show.
I didn't hate it, but there were parts of it that just didn't work for me. Hated the stereotypical portrayal of the gay characters and thought the shouting part wasn't particularly funny and overdone.
Parts of the set looked cheap, in particular the San Francisco skyline which looked unfinished and I kept waiting for another setpiece to slot into it.
The worst part for me was the mask. I was sat about a third of the way back in the stalls and for me it looked like a bad Halloween mask and not very convincing.
The songs were ok but not particularly memorable. It was very well recieved by a packed out Opera House who leapt to their feet for an instant ovation which I really didn't think it deserved and did my best not to join in.

It'll be because a lot of papers etc will only review a show one, so if a transfer is nailed on already you may well have the press come to the London press night where it needs more help to sell. |

Phoniex - again come from away closes Jan 23
Savoy / Pretty woman extended till April I feel Doubtfire would rather start sooner than wait till April and also heard Hadestown
Apollo- The Apollo has Upstart Crow currently and Derren Brown’s show “SHOWMAN” until 18th March 23

Theatre size is going to be a big factor surely. I don't know what the sets are like, but if they're particularly large they won't be going into something of playhouse proportions. Which musical houses are about to become vacant? I guess there's the Phoenix and The Prince Edward?

The only theatres that are even a vague chance for this are the Shaftesbury or the Adelphi.
I don’t think either are going to happen.
