They turned this into a musical? Really?? I have no interest in seeing cash-ins like this. The subject instantly tells me that the writer is only interested in making money and has no imagination. They did it quite a while ago…shouldn’t really be news at this stage.

I've seen the first act from my sofa and immediately booked a trip to Manchester. Within 24 hours it was gone so the second act will be new to me as things stand.

Forgot to mention the current Mrs Fleming in heathers is followed by the account and follows the account could she be Miranda Hillard??

It is so so different from taking a much adapted fairy tale and turning that into a musical even though many others have already done that. And did a better job. It's far riskier to do Cinderella than a box office smash hit movie of the 90s. The fact that lots of people have already done versions of Cinderella themselves, and the fact that it is such a famous fairytale, makes it a far less safe project. You may prefer other medical adaptions of the story, and that's fine, but it doesn't change this fact.

I saw the Mrs. Doubtfire 3 times and enjoyed it more each time. The last time it was with new children and Mark Evan's was out and the show worked brilliantly. It's a story about a father's love for his children. It's about the definition of family. It also has a terrific role for a lead male identifying actor. The show has an all new musical score. Although some of the score is not traditional. An actor or theatre professional may appreciate more than the general public. I think, like Legally Blonde, it was not welcome on Broadway which means it will be nominated for buckets of Oliviers and could win a few. Glad you enjoyed it. I haven't seen it so it could be that it's amazing. I'm just very sceptical about musicals that are adaptations of hugely successful films. It seems like an attempt to cash in but perhaps in this case the writers were genuinely creative with the idea and had a vision.

Frozen was widely derided when it was on Broadway but given that most people now seem to think it’s the cats whiskers there’s nothing to say that Mrs D won’t be changed for it’s U.K. run. I mean, why wouldn’t they try to rectify any problems? Also, am I detecting a bit of the old “it’s not opening in London so it must be rubbish” attitude we’ve seen so often in the past? There generally is a lot of snobbishness about theatre and how London theatres are the ‘best’. Not that capacity determines this but London doesn’t even have the UKs largest theatre does it?! I see a lot of touring and regional productions and often prefer to West end shows.

If they want to rework the show from its Broadway incarnation it makes sense to have an "out-of-town-tryout" before bringing it to London. More shows should do this.

I guess it depends what you gain from unrelentingly bigging a show up. There’s a big difference between critical thought and blind adoration.
I could enjoy Mrs D as I think I’ve only seen the film once, so it certainly won’t be overfamiliar to me. I’m really looking forward to Beetlejuice too.

Just had a little Google… Guys and Dolls and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels are the two that stand out. Also a play by Zach Braff and what look like a couple of jukebox musicals (Monkee Business and Love Me Tender).
Also a vampire-themed musical comedy called Vampirette (“The show includes new takes on classic songs including I've Got You Under My Skin, Down At The Club, Come Fly With Me, California Girls, Total Eclipse Of The Heart, Eloise and more . . . plus appropriately wicked dance moves.”) I’m guessing that wasn’t a success?

Mary Poppins had a pre-London run in Bristol way back in 2004.
I'm very intrigued by this new musical of Mrs Doubtfire. I've always loved the film - it's a personal favourite - but that's because Robin Williams truly made it what it was. That means that everything hinges on the casting of the lead role here. You not only need to cast someone who can knock it out of the park to begin with, but also you have to have incredible understudies who can cover. And of course, if it becomes a long-runner can you reproduce that casting standard with each passing year?
When I saw Bertie Carvel as Miss Trunchbull, the stamp he put on the iconic character was genius. It was one of my favourite performances I've ever seen in a musical. I've seen the show a few times since and no performer has achieved that same magic. It's a difficult one.
What theatre is it destined for now?

Do you mean you get pleasure out of seeing a musical whether you consider it good or bad (presumably the former would be a greater enjoyment for you but you would still enjoy the experience of seeing the latter)? You say `every time' which suggests that you enjoy the experience for its own sake quite apart from your appreciation of the musical itself.

I just like the genre. 141 attended so far in 2022, mostly alone and all as a paying customer. Just 4 I wouldn't see again even if offered a free ticket to do so, and several repeat visits to the same show within a few weeks. No different to a friend whose main pleasure in life is attending football matches irrespective of whether his team wins or loses, plays well in his view or badly. He likes watching football, I like watching musicals. I always try to get a front row stalls seat as near the centre as possible and manage that 90% of the time. I dislike having any people in front of me bar the conductor, orchestra and cast !

The people enjoying it are enjoying it for different reasons than the quality of the songs. Pretty Woman - rubbish songs and yet still running. Sister Act - loved it the other week but the songs are not (imo) memorable. These film to musical crossovers already have the familiarity/nostalgia appeal that goes beyond traditional MT fans.

More shows should do this.In addition to &Juliet as oxfordsimon mentions, Bat out of Hell and Back to the Future also did the same, running at Manchester Opera House prior to the London run.
