It would absolutely be illegal now not to change the advertising but practically I wonder how long that would take.

It would absolutely be illegal now not to change the advertising but practically I wonder how long that would take. Probably a week if it was treated as a rush job by designers and printers. Realistically probably more like a fortnight or so.

I somehow had the weird feeling this was about to happen. Between covid and fainting it's been a short but problems-riddled run, I doubt we'll see him on stage again any time soon Without wanting to sound harsh, how many performances did he actually do? 😞

Well I suppose I can say that I was one of the lucky few that has seen Tarons Cock but imagine if you’ve paid £200 to see this? Sounds to me like he’s the new Martine McCutcheon: doubt any other producers will be keen to offer him another stage role any time soon.

I’m seeing this next week. Disappointing news but can’t be helped, and I’m glad I know in advance. Hope Taron‘s not too ill and doesn’t leave it another decade before doing more stage work.
I liked Joel Harper-Jackson in Kinky Boots though, so I’m sure I’ll like him in this. (It also incidentally means there’s two gay leads playing boyfriends in the West End.)
They are some very expensive tickets when the main draw isn’t in it though.

When I forked out for premium pricing for this, I did so knowing I was financing Hollywood casting. Now I'm not, I'm wondering where that money is going.
I will be looking at what my options are to cancel and re-book when prices inevitably plummet.

A very interesting turn of events. I note with interest the lack of tribute to Egerton from Elliot and Bailey in the announcement.
I’m seeing the show later this month and, whilst Bailey and Elliot were a bigger draw for me than Egerton, I’m pleased I went for cheaper seats when I booked it last year.

A very interesting turn of events. I note with interest the lack of tribute to Egerton from Elliot and Bailey in the announcement. I noticed that too. Bailey's a star on the up, with Bridgerton being (apparently) one of Netflix's most streamed shows ever, and while I'm sure it's Netflix PR people doing what PR people do, his name is apparently being considered for the next Bond. Phil Daniels is a legend to many, and Jade's hardly an unknown. So if you just want to see famous actors, rather than a specific famous actor, then you should still be fine. IMO £200 is too much for a simple production, no matter who the star is. Call me a cynic, but I don't think theatres should pay big stars huge salaries to do theatre. They don't need the money, and even the most generous of West End salaries will be a rounding error on their bank balances. I'm not saying they should do it for free, but the reason they are doing it is because they enjoy it, or want to challenge themselves, or they want the prestige. Delete as applicable.

Regardless of the reasons for Taron Egerton leaving the production, I thought that the statements from Elliot and Bailey were slightly oddly worded (shades of the king is dead, long live the king). That said I guess the main comms message is aimed at those who already have tickets - and is about the production being just as good even though the top billed star, who will have been the reason many booked, is no longer appearing.
They've already removed all reference to Egerton from the website - though may not yet have sorted out billing etc as now there's no one listed either above or below the title!

IMO £200 is too much for a simple production, no matter who the star is. Agree on this. And this is a very "simple" production. 4 actors, one static set, no props. It almost makes it justifiable to charge that for a big show like The Music Man where you have a cast of 40 and all the bells and whistles. But not for this Joel Harper-Jackson has certainly landed on his feet here though, and I'm sure we'll be seeing a lot more of him after this gig because he really is great.

As the “cost of living crisis” is set to get worse it will be interesting to see what effect it will have on theatre tickets as even the cheaper seats become unaffordable to a lot of people.

What's the website address? Nervous to Google "cock play"... You can search “Cock the play Mike Bartlett” or “Cock the play West End” or “Cock play Marianne Elliott”/Jonathan Bailey and the like. The play is at Ambassador Theatre, part of the ATG (Ambassador Theatre Group) group. The ATG’s website has all their scheds and ticket prices.

I'm not nervous really, I Google that more than I like to admit.

... Although, interestingly, googling 'cock the play Mike Bartlett' gets me a link to buy the script, the archived Royal Court web page and a Guardian review from 2009 before eventually getting to third party ticket agents. Maybe the producers need to get on the case of their search optimisation?...

I am a fan of Bailey and Marianne Elliott, but I would not have paid so much for my ticket without the participation of Egerton. I know it is beyond the production's control, but feel like I should get £40 refunded to me. Hugely disappointed. Was so excited to see Taron on stage. Now I am just sad I spent so much to see this show.

They better offer refunds or this show is a complete and utter scam. Selling an entire run on his name and not being able to deliver on it is the problem of the producers not audiences. Audiences should not have to pay for their inability to deliver. They won’t even refund two of my four tickets after my mum having multiple fractures means she and my dad won’t be able to get to London so I doubt they’ll refund for this!

I was told reasons for Taron leaving about a week ago so was waiting for this day to come and wasn't shocked when it did. Since I don't know him/for sure I won't spread gossip on the reasons but it does seem that he didn't have Covid. I don't work on/am any way associated with the producion or company.

I am yet to see this show but I must admit, the fact that his exit may have been 'staged' is something that did cross my mind.

I'm not saying I don't believe you, but I'm not sure what anyone would have to gain by saying he had Covid if he didn't. It obviously isn't the reason for his departure so it seems odd to say it if it isn't true.

I wish people wouldn’t do this. If you can’t/are not willing to share what you were told, don’t drop mysterious hints like this. Either spill or keep quiet entirely. It’s not fair to anyone to say ‘I know the real reason and it’s not what they were saying’.

I'm not sure what anyone would have to gain by saying he had Covid if he didn't. If it's something like stage fright or an emotional issue, then saying to the public/producers it's covid would allow them to take time out to recover, I suppose, without drawing attention to it.

I have to say my reasons for going this are that it's a Mike Bartlett play I haven't seen and Phil Daniels is in it. I know some of what the others have done but am ambivalent about celeb casting, however celeb prices with understudies is a recipe for trouble however good the understudy might me.
Having said that, looking forward to seeing this! Egerton or no Egerton.
