Diving Final! Heart is in my mouth here. Tom Daley in first position and we are halfway there.
Edit: Bronze for Tom! Great achievement, those Chinese divers really stepped up for those final three dives.

Expectations against reality: I don't think I've ever seen anyone more devastated at getting silver instead of gold than Dina Averina in the rhythmic gymnastics final, or anyone so ecstatically delighted at getting bronze as Alina Harnasko after ranking fourth in the first three rotations.

Looking at the medal table, in terms of population capita, Australia has done exceptionally well this time round.
Japan has really done themselves proud as well and I don't think it's just a home advantage either.

Ooh, the Russians are unhappy at the rhythmic gymnastics results. They're claiming the results were fixed because winner Linoy Ashram (Israel) dropped her ribbon during the final rotation and so it's apparently not possible that she could have beaten Russian Dina Averina. (Never mind that Averina herself dropped her ribbon in a competition in 2018 and still came first.) They're being terribly poor losers, and the Russian fans are posting insanely xenophobic comments all over social media. It's almost like they think that because Dina Averina has dominated RG for the past few years she has a right to gold just by turning up.
It's all rubbish, of course. The current code of points has no real limit on the difficulty score: it can go as high as the number of points you can cram into 90 seconds so with enough difficulty a gymnast can easily (well, not easily: it's called a difficulty score, after all) offset minor errors by performing a more difficult routine. And that's what Ashram did: her difficulty scores were higher than Averina's right across the board so the 1.7 deduction she got on the ribbon wasn't enough to wipe out her lead.
After the exemplary behaviour of the artistic gymnasts supporting and congratulating each other, and the behaviour of the other rhythmic gymnasts doing the same, it's disappointing to see how the Russians are throwing their toys out of their pram. Terrible sportsgymnastship.

And the Russians came second in the rhythmic gymnastics group competition as well. Head coach Irina Viner has a reputation for being somewhat uncompromising — brutally abusive, some would say, and one commentator once said she could give lessons to Tony Soprano — so I expect the Russian gymnasts are in for a miserable few days for not coming home with gold.
(I like Russians as people, but the state's constant desperation to show that they're winners makes me think of an overweight middle-aged man with an expensive sports car and a fierce dog.)

I've seen it said a few times that the bronze medallist often seems happier than the silver medallist, because they are thinking about how they avoided 4th place and got onto the podium, whereas the silver medallist is thinking about how they almost got gold. That effect is even more pronounced when there's a gold medal match and bronze medal match. I do worry about the reactions from coaches with unrealistic expectations of perfection, but the pressure of keeping or losing funding is also massive.

How bizarre is the syncro swimming. Very skilled but also makes me laugh when they walk to the pool with their nose clips on. It's like watching the North Korean army marching in swimsuits.

Going to be some interesting discussion around funding. Rowing currently gets £27.4m, BMX gets £1.50.
Will be some smashing skateboard and BMX parks around the country

A massive well done to the whole GB team coming in with 65 medals, equalling 2012 and at fourth place in the medal table. A credit to the whole country in what has been a difficult year especially for those trying to train.

We did well for saying some of our top stars were either injured at the wrong time or didnt perform to expectation.
Good to see Jason Kenny come away with that Gold. I love Laura Kenny as well but you got the impression she was done after her Gold the other day, infact she said that, and you wonder if she didnt mentally really turn up for her last event this morni6n, which I dont know how I feel about.

Anyone else feeling sad now it's over? There were so many things to watch and for the past three days I've been getting up around 02:00 to follow the gymnastics and now all the events have finished and it's ... OK, what do I do now?

Have to say I really didn't get into it this time around mainly due to the time difference and also the poor coverage on the BBC but I don't blame them as they did the best they could with what they could show. I disagree with the way Tokyo sold TV rights so that Eurosport got most of the coverage. Also no audience didn't help as there was very little atmosphere, again they did as best as they could.

I bought a one month subscription to Eurosport so I could watch it and it was OK, but I found their website design annoying — it's clearly not designed to work with as many simultaneous events as we've had over the past couple of weeks — and many of their videos had advertisements. I get that they need advertising for their free services but if I'm paying I'd like to have access to an ad-free version. On the other hand they did make some of the extra video services available that the BBC never did.

All in all a great Olympic Games, well done Japan.
One of the great things with the Olympics it forces me to watch sports I wouldn’t ordinarily watch.
I thought it was going to be a disaster, at the beginning I didn’t understand why the Japanese didn’t do a mass vaccine roll out, like we did here and allow people into the venues, but excepted early on there were not going to be spectators and enjoyed it for what it was.

you wonder if she didnt mentally really turn up for her last event this morni6n, which I dont know how I feel about. I think that's more than a bit unfair given she won two of the four disciplines! As the 2x defending champion she was always going to be picked, but GB could have given Elinor Barker or Katie Archibald the ride instead. Though given she didn't ride the team pursuit final Barker may not have been on top form either.

She literally said it though, she said she feels like her Olympics is over in the interviews she gave after the Gold and she alluded to feeling like that in her interviews this morning as well. I'm just saying that maybe she wasn't as motivated and focused on the event as she might have been normally. She has natural ability and so that is always going to get her so far even if she wasn't fully committed. I think it would have been a good opportunity to throw someone else in there who maybe felt like they had more to achieve.

I don't normally follow sport but I got sucked into the Olympics even if it leads to tiredness due to getting up to watch events early in the morning. I am glad the 2024 Games are in Paris so I can view it at a decent time

I’ve watched her event 3 times today and I’d say the massive crash that her was not her fault in the first race probably had more to do with it than anything that happened the other day. There’s not a lot you can do when the person directly in front of you goes down and takes you out.

That rash was the Italian job. A pretty nasty cash and very surprised everyone got up and was able to carry, however crashes do have consequences.

Admittedly occasionally ad free also meant commentary free but mostly it was okay. It might help that I got a Eurosport subscription last autumn & have watched goodness knows how many hours of cycling since. I find www.eurosportplayer.com much easier to use than www.eurosport.co.uk.

None of that means she didn't mentally show up though, which is what you accused her of. She clearly did given her performance in the two events she won today, and the fact she fought right to the end to take the last sprint despite not being able to win by then.

There’s not a lot you can do when the person directly in front of you goes down and takes you out. Totally. You don't get to where Laura is without being someone who keeps on fighting, no matter how tough things are, or because you've already achieved success. It's a turn of phrase. Apparently Kenny told her that he was ready to go home, but he still went and won gold against many expectations! Other people in the team comment on her ability to laugh and joke between events, then switch it on when it happens. I think it's safe to say that she was very focused on winning in the Madison, and was pleased the hard work paid off and wasn't ruined by being caught up in a crash. The crash was definitely not her fault, and while everyone involved was OK, it will be a bit disorientating. It sounds as if the gap between events in the omnium was pretty short too, so tired legs was bound to play a role. I have to say I'm amazed how philosophical the cyclists are about being taken out of a race because of a crash that wasn't their fault. Presumably it happens often enough that they feel it evens out in the end. A bit like a lucky net chord in tennis, but it must be gutting when it's your once every four year chance of an Olympic medal.
