I'm not a football fan, but have family/friend who went to the semi and are going to the final. There are quite strict covid rules in place - proof of vaccine or negative test within 48 hours, staggered entry times up to 3 hours before kick off, etc. So I'd guess the increase in male positive cases is more from people gathering in pubs or homes to watch in large groups, not so much from stadiums.
As others have said 'the fans' are a mixed group, the majority of whom are not violent and will be horrified by the one person who pointed a laser at a player.
I agree that theatres, choirs etc have been treated harshly, but it's not either/or, we can think that and still be happy for football fans who are getting to do what they love doing.

Anything that lifts the mood of the nation after everything we have gone through must surely be a positive. As I said earlier I am no football fan and was always the last to be picked at school but will be supporting tomorrow. I am sure everyone has already seen this but just one example of how the team is bringing some joy. |

I'm not usually into football at all, but this is all a bit more fun so I will watch tonight. Watched my first entire game on Wednesday! But yeah all the hooliganism does put a huge downer on it all. I don't know why they have to go so crazy. Also fed up with Scottish people hating the English, wind your necks in.

Welsh and Scottish supporters have a long history of supporting “whoever is playing England”. There’s of course a bigger political movement in both Scotland and Wales regarding independence and a dislike for the way Westminster governs everything, and there are definitely strong feelings involved there, but that’s a different discussion irrelevant to the Euros. |

I think it is more than rivalry in this case (if Scotland were in the final, England and Wales would support them), it's more your second paragraph there, but no need to get into all that here.

If you think England and Wales would support Scotland if they were in the final instead then I don't think you really understand football "fans" at all... Hate is an unnecessarily strong word in most contexts, including this one. No need for you to be that incendiary. |

Walking through Leicester Square earlier on this morning, there were a lot of fans who must have had a liquid breakfast. I just wonder come kick off time what state they will be in. Thoughts and prayers for the TFL staff this afternoon and evening.
Not a football fan, but I can’t help getting swept up in the atmosphere here in London. I just hope we can win. It will do the whole country a world of good after the last 18 months.

Being Welsh and not a football fan I will be neutral if I watch the match which is highly unlikely.
I am really impressed with the ‘woke’ England Team who truly represent the core British values of inclusivity and compassion and hope it begins the swing from the xenophobic narrative post Brexit and be the catalyst for reducing the division that has been present over the last few years and gets us back to a Britain that was wonderfully present during the 2012 Olympics which was the last time I was proud to be British.
If nothing at all it has made it difficult for Johnson and Co to hang onto their coat tails.
Enjoy the game, hope the result is the one you want and hopefully tonight the fans in the stadium will not boo the Italian National Anthem and are a reflection of the team on the pitch.

Totally, now I’m a big rugby fan and have been to games surrounded by fans in the same condition. Having paid a lot of money to attend why get into such a state and either not see the game or get kicked out the stadium by stewards ( I’ve seen that happen on quite a few occasions). Enjoy the game and atmosphere and have something to remember rather than nursing a massive hangover. |

The fans have already climbed onto the canopy of Wyndhams theatre and the roof of the tube station entrance too. And Leicester Square is trashed.

I have just walked through the area from tne Noel Coward theatre to get to the Vauderville theatre and it is absolute chaos around there. |

Trashing a city centre and making life miserable for the people who live and work there isn't acceptable no matter how big the game is.

So many drunken yobs. Consistently England fans embarrass the nation, as do many fans of other countries (racist/homophobic chanting and "ultra" hooligans are endemic across Eastern Europe and even very affluent parts of the West) So I 100% take that point and side of the argument, it's an embarrassment to see. On a wider note though, football is our national sport and adored by tens of millions who don't behave this way. This is the biggest England game - or football game generally - in living memory for many (most?) people. I wouldn't expect a theatre forum to exactly be huge football fans, but some of the comments on here have been baffling. I love theatre, I love sport and I love my country. Important to keep a wide range of interests and not look at the thugs and hooligans as anything more than a microcosm of our wider national pride of having done so well in this competition.
