For those who are a leeeetle more open to opinions that might challenge their own it’s channel 236 on Freeview from 8pm sunday 13th June. Nigel Farage is on tonight. There is no opinion in the world that could convince me to agree with him on anything. Also 'open to opinions'? Funny how these rent a gobs aren't open to other opinions when it pertains to the negative outcomes of Brexit that keep on presenting themselves.

If they were actually thought through consistent opinions it might be worth it but what we've seen, particularly since Brexit is the UK right have adopted the Republican approach of criticising everything from the left while ignoring similar or usually much worse faults from right wing politicians. Shouting about culture war crap to disguise the corruption and incompetence of this government.
Andrew Neil has some dodgy journalistic standards but as an interviewer at least he usually tried to be rigorous to all sides. You can't say that about any of the bunch of rent a gobs and no hopers he's hired for this new channel though.

Dan Wootton spent five minutes broadcasting 'Covid is a scare story' conspiracy theories.
How is that allowed under broadcasting standards?

Just put it on for a few minutes. Turned it back off, for good.
Only good bit was when Dan Wootton’s mike was muted.

I am very surprised this is backed by the US Discover network, which is predominantly known for wildlife filming, to funding a right wing television news network, the right wing kind of backs oil companies, which is completely at odds at what Discovery makes.
The Dan Wootton ‘Covid is a scare story’. I didn’t notice he had such an opinion when Covid first blew up last year, when there was hardly a car on the road.

Did you find anything to challenge opinion? Well given that Covid is a fact, any opinion that refutes that shouldn't be given airtime. Spreading such misinformation is a danger to public health.

Let draw a veil over, about not watching/talking, obviously the poster has, despite saying he wasn’t, but it is a big event in the media, we are all Rey curious. However a ‘news station’ that isn’t reporting news, but just opining the news, so really a radio talk station on the box - which leads to hyperbole, so this in itself will draw watching, talking and publicity.
I lasted about 3 minutes, the studio looks nice.

I did read that AN interview and so it was quite surprising to me, that despite him saying he wanted to be clear that no "fake news, conspiracy theories or misinformation" would be allowed and anyone doing so would be disciplined, that on their very first day of operating Dan Wootton presented a segment peddling a Covid is a hoax and conspiracy theories angle. Let's wait and see if he gets "disciplined" for that....

Seems clear from the snippets I saw (and the people they reportedly have tried but failed to hire) that they are after a LBC on the telly vibe. Given this has been tried in many countries before with little success, and the lack of big hitters on their cast list (seriously would you consider any apart from Neil a substantial figure here - most are either distinct second raters, or long past their best), seems unlikely it will make it in its current form. It will probably struggle through to Xmas and have a massive revamp into something tha tpeople might actually watch more than a few minutes of. (For what it's worth, I'm not a big fan of the 24 hour news channels that already exist as they equally rely on weak talent, aging has-beens and endless repetition of 30 second sound bites padded out with another repeat of an entertainment segment that's already been on a few dozen times that week).

My friend told me that in this segment he also talked about no need to lock down travel as covid is an air born disease it travels on it's own. Whilst peddling hoax conspiracies.

Anything that triggers leftists has my full support. It's been hilarious to watch them go into full meltdown before a single second of output has been broadcast. I guess we now know who GB News' target audience is, and the kind of mindset they'll be aiming at. It really is a shame that this is what our country's political discourse has come to. Truth, dignity, facts, all of it takes a backseat to "triggering the left" and I guess that it's perfectly acceptable for baseless and repeatedly debunked conspiracy theories spouted by thoroughly unserious grifters, as well as comparisons between lockdown guidance and the Nazis, to be given a mainstream platform as long as you can conjure up an image of a strawman leftist being upset. The right-wing of this country, despite having essentially 100% of the political will, capitol and power and having gotten more or less everything they wanted over the last 11 years, truly has nothing to offer beyond this nonsensical culture war in which people who have been establishment media figures for years or decades claim that they have somehow been "silenced" despite having platforms most could only dream of. GB News is just going to be more of the same, giving a voice to those who already had one, so that they can continue to say what they have always been given platforms to say, all fronted by one of the most noted establishment figures of all, who claims to be a patriot whilst beaming in from his tax exile in the south of France. What a joke.

GB News joins the plethora of biased news sources whose primary purpose is propaganda/influence rather than information distribution. (When you look at how much money The Sun is currently losing, it's clear that for many of these operators, that purpose overrides any need to be profitable.)
I would dearly love to find a news source that:
- Describes events accurately, in detail and without political bias - Disregards "spin" from anyone not prepared to go on the record - Makes choices as to what to cover based on their importance/significance and without political influence - Only covers human-interest stories where there is a clear public interest in doing so, or the account is provided voluntarily without pressure by those involved
I don't think any news organisation comes close. I used to like the i newspaper, but it was then bought by the Daily Mail, so I couldn't with good conscience continue to fund it, and, from front pages I've seen since, its sister paper's influence has been felt.

The trick I used back when shortwave radio was popular was to get my news from a vast array of different stations and see what the consensus was. Most stations were biased — many of them, particularly in the less democratic parts of the world, existed purely to be the voice of the government — but because there was no worldwide conspiracy for all countries to tell the same lie it was fairly easy to get an accurate picture of what was happening. If Germany, the Netherlands, Romania, the UK, the US, Australia, Ecuador and Argentina were telling one story about Russia and Radio Moscow was saying "it totally wasn't us it was oh look a squirrel" then it wasn't hard to work out which version of the story was likely to be accurate.

Failing all that I’d recommend Bella.

Apparently companies starting to pull their advertising from the channel. Probably just playing into their hands, getting them more free publicity for the channel.
I’m sure they’ll be claiming victimhood next, saying people are trying to silence them for saying things no-one else has the guts to. 😒
